  79. On Stovohobo's Ficlets Best Practices: No More Nonsense:

    posted 3 months ago

A purely nonsensical Ficlet is wonderful (there was an early one about library elves that was just absurd to the extreme).
    .
However, writing a one-sentence Ficlet or filling up half of the page with punctuation just to meet the character limit is rude to the original author, the readers, and Ficlets in general.
    .
And THX did suffer the gravest of injustices in this line.

  80. On R_M's Ficlets Best Practices #3: Ficlet Structure:

    posted 3 months ago

I can say that the first time I was sequeled (off of a poem, not a short story), I felt a surprising amount of pride. Something I had written inspired someone else to write. Can you imagine a better feeling for a writer to have?

  81. On R_M's Ficlets Best Practices #2: Comment and Rate It!:

    posted 3 months ago

I’ve often noticed that people’s biographies will say, “Please comment” or something like that, but they themselves haven’t commented.
    .
Because I wanted comments, I started writing my own. (And Kermit, it took you & THX 3 months to get more comments than I had.)
    .
Although, I will add that if something is terribly, terribly wrong, I’d prefer to send a private note to the author. Leaving it in their comment space is like having a teacher say, “This is crap,” in front of the whole class.

  82. On R_M's Ficlets Best Practices Introduction:

    posted 3 months ago

R_M, I think you made your case quite clearly. I’m only upset that your tips are all sequelled off of this one, rather than being a series.
    .
If you want people to actually understand what you’re writing, you should follow basic grammar, which does allow for dialect.
    .
Some authors have invented their own styles or words, but they used an existing guideline as the base.
    .
As my professor used to say: “Learn the rules before you break them.”

  83. On R_M's Ficlets Best Practices #1: Paragraph Spacing:

    posted 3 months ago

And as a former editor, there is no reason to confuse your reader.
    .
The audience should never have to re-read a sentence to understand its meaning.

  84. On R_M's Ficlets Best Practices #1: Paragraph Spacing:

    posted 3 months ago

A blessing on your head, R_M.
    .
When I published my very first Ficlet, I used indenting. Then I went and looked at it, saw that the indenting didn’t take, so I went back to edit it.
    .
Ever since, I have used paragraphs. I put them in while I’m writing, so it’s not a matter of taking words out.
    .
When I see someone else’s page hasn’t been sectioned into paragraphs, I either don’t read it or rate it a star lower because the author has frustrated me so much.
