I like it. Where will it go from here? And who will take us there?

...happy as only a 6-year-old can be. Ahhh, how I remember those days. Nice little descriptive narrative.

So, are you Jag or Chris?

I like the existential flavor of the whole piece which is highlighted by the text message reply: “Are we ever really anywhere?” Great job! Five stars (if the ratings work again).

    @THX0477:

Glad you liked the sequel. I felt inspired to write because of this installment and its predecessor. You paint a very vivid picture, and I found your use of words to accomplish that exceptional. I particularly liked, in this ficlet, the description of the sunlight coming through the sun catchers and seemingly breaking the laws of physics. Great job. I’d rate you 5 stars, if the ratings were working. I’ll be back when they are.

This sequel was certainly a long time in coming, but worth the wait. I like the references to the “child actor gone bad” scenario that has happened all too often in reality. It makes it more interesting, given Wil Wheaton posted the initial thread that we have continued. The only thing that threw me a little in the reading of it was the change from past to present tense toward the end. In any event, I guess the ball is back in my court now. I’ll try not to disappoint with next installment of Gary’s “mess.”

@ALR0613 and John P.: Glad you enjoyed this sequel. The “head-fake” and keeping with the “twist” theme started in the prequel was exactly what I shooting for.

Well, that was certainly an unexpected twist! You did a great job setting up the tranquil park scene and in doing so built up the scene so that I was left expecting an interaction consisting of “boy meets girl” and “boy asks girl out.” Nice job not ending with such a cliche, but taking the reader falsely in that direction. Makes the payoff that much better. I also liked the way the narrator is developed. The reader is led to believe this person is a kind and caring soul. Just goes to show, you never know.

Too funny, and probably not too far from the truth regarding the denial factor!

You set the tone for a very tranquil scene quite well through your description and Jason’s actions and thoughts. Reading it, I felt as though I was sitting there next to him. I could picture vividly the sunset you describe.

@John: Agreed. We do not know the circumstances of these characters yet. the scenario you describe would lend to the revelation being “the worst news ever.”

    Very poetic. Good job.

Great writing. But… “the worst news ever”? I guess it depends on your situation. To me, if I knew I was going to be a father, I’d welcome it with open arms.

  14. On Reality:

Intriguing. Possibilities are wide open for sequels or prequels. Good set-up with regard to questioning the world around us and having doubts about what we believe to be true.

Great descriptive narrative. Brought me back to my own arcade days!

Good tie-in to both prequels AND a great twist at the end. Was not expecting the note to be from his friend.

I like it. It got me thinking and, together with the sequel to it, inspired me to add a third installment.

  21. On Real Death:

You create good atmosphere and mood. I like it. After reading Wil’s initial Ficlet, I got the feel a continuation could go in this direction. I don’t know if that was intentional on his part or not.
