Yeah, that was first brought up in the originating story “Revenge Is A Dish Best Served Cold”. Didn’t realize until I started writing this ficlet that I hadn’t brought that up.
Kermitgorf: Yeah, unusual for me, I know. I tried writing it a little more… I don’t know… “family friendly”, I guess. But no matter what I tried, it just didn’t read right to me.
Sorry. The geek in me is forcing me to say this: Tauntaun, not ton-ton. :) . Okay. Geek moment over. . But, regardless, deserves way more than a mere 5 stars for what you’ve done with this series! Loving it! LoA
“And why do they even need those huge antennae” Well, you know what they say about the size of an alien’s antennae… . Great job on this one! And grats on being featured. LoA
Whenever I watch Return of the Jedi, my mind always edits the big reveal. “Leia! Leia’s my sister! Uh… Ben… We’ve got to talk…” ;-) Loving this series! . “Now if we can just get her into a bra…” Awwww…. Do we hafta? LoA
Thanks, thebetweenspace. It’s good to be back, though it might be a bit sporadic for a bit. I’m working 60+ hour weeks right now, and it plays havoc with my creativity. I actually was inspired to write this story while watching “The Crow”. Probably a good thing the inspiration hit today instead of yesterday, when I watched “House of 1,000 Corpses” and “The Devil’s Rejects” (both excellent movies if you like horror flicks). :)
I think we’ll mark this down under “Great Minds Think Alike”. I was debating on doing a sequel to this, and this is very much like what I had in mind. Wonderful job! Thank you! LoA
“it was Wil’s blog that introduced me to Ficlets” You, too, huh? It’s all your fault, Wheaton! (More and more thanks.) You did a great job on this! I’d like to see Wil’s opinion on this, but from reading his blog, Just A Geek, and The Happiest Days of Our Lives, I think you captured Wil quite nicely. LoA
I had a stray thought about what Satan would do if he went into a confessional. Would he go there to confess or to gloat? The last line was actually the first line I wrote. I just knew I wanted to end it on that note.
Okay, I admit, I got lazy on this one. But the lines just screamed to be put together into a story of their own. Yeah. Yeah, that’s it. It’s the lines fault! They made me do this! That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. :D
The really hard part is no one following this can say with 100% certainty that he won’t shoot her. There are more than enough great tales where the darkness wins out in the end. Looking forward to the next part! LoA
Of course, the other point of view is that his choice decides his fate. I have no idea if that makes any sense. I know what I meant, but whether or not I got it out properly… Of to read More! More! More! :D LoA
Oh, man. Probably my second least favourite option of how to go (the first being drowning in the ocean). shudder This just gets better and better. :D LoA
I think I’m going to have to agree with Kevin on this one. While it’s not exactly Hemingway (subject matter aside, it’s more along the lines of something I would have written in elementary school), it does make a point. It takes a bully, turns the tables on them, and shows them the error of their ways. My only two problems with it (other than formatting): no reason to link it to THX’s story, and the last line is really pretty pointless.
Thanks, Mistress Elsha Hawk. Proof that I sometimes put too much “thought” into my stories. ;) What I’d really like to know is why that’s the most common mistake I make when writing.
I would call this and the prequel complete tripe, but that gives tripe a bad name. Please help the human race advance and keep this racist garbage where it belongs.
Wow! That was awesome! One suggestion, if you don’t mind. The line “swords and axes clinging against each other”. I think you mean “clanging”. :) Otherwise, a fabulous little story! LoA
Very nice follow-up! I had originally intended the story as a professional killer on his first job, but I think the pure sociopath approach works much better. Ups the ‘creep’ factor a couple of notches. Ace job! LoA
Ficlets is giving me a lot of practise writing stories in the ‘weird fiction’ style of the great Howard Phillips Lovecraft. If you’re never read any of Lovecraft’s works, you really should. He was an amazing author, and there’s a huge number of authors who continue working on the Cthulhu Mythos under the group Diver’s Hands (including such famous authors as Stephen King).
DING Give the man a prize! Yeah, I had a stray thought about what was going through the monster’s mind after ol’ Vic reanimated him. :D And thanks for the compliment. I’m glad you liked it.
Hmmm… I’m really going to have to think about this one. Physically, I’ve never really been seriously injured (no broken bones – 38 years and counting fingers crossed). Emotionally, though… Hmmm… Tough one. But I’m sure I can come up with something.
Reminds me of an episode of MA*SH, when Father Mulcahey was preaching about the evils of drinking after Klinger gives him a slug of whiskey (the Father not knowing what it was, of course) to calm his nerves. :D Nice one! LoA
Well, truth is, I was thinking in much more general terms than that. Thus the line, “Free of political, religious, or personal affliction.” The concept being that there are certain truths that transcend opinions guided by those three forces. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. If that’s what you believe, and you are strong in those beliefs, I say more power to you! :) After all, I think, in the end, we’re all trying to get to the same place. We’re just on different roads.
Well, since no one seems to be catching it: Dealey Plaza. Dallas, Texas. Three shots. The hint: John Wilkes Booth. Instead of killing his intended target, his shots passed through a ripple in time, killing John F. Kennedy.
Because every one tells you that you’re an adult, now, so you have to grow up. I say you have to grow old, your don’t have to grow up. (I’m a 38-year-old kid, so I’m living proof.) :D Nice job! LoA
Got a reply back from Kevin. He suggested that, even though “fair use” should cover it, that it be changed to “80’s cartoon archetypes” instead. I think that works just beautifully, and it still holds with the spirit of the challenge.
Got it in one, Adam. :D I’ll one-up you in the ‘sad’ department. It’s at the beginning of the Junkion attack on the Autobots. The full line: “Don’t look behind door number 2, Monty. It’s time to play End Of The Line, My Valentine. Geroni-do-ron-ron-ronimooooo!” cue Weird Al’s Dare To Be Stupid. :D
I’m of two minds on this. On the one hand, yes, very strong, and, having known people who suffered from various cancers (some beat it, others…), I can empathize, to a certain extent, with the character. On the other hand: Doctor: I have good news and bad news. The good news is, you have six months to live. Patient: Six months?! What’s the bad news? Doctor: We found out four months ago. BA-DUM-BUM Great job! Keep it up! LoA
Ah, there’s the mystery for others to find out. I’ll give you all a hint using a simple replacement cypher: Fkdj Sehgao Xkkpd I love encryption puzzles. :D
You know, I look at this and I think about a couple of other stories I’ve written on here. I think I could make a whole career out of writing stories involving guys suffering from foot-in-mouth disease. :D
I’ve sent a note off to Kevin to get his opinion. If he asks me to change it, I will. I will leave a note here, one way or the other, when I get a response. Thanks for your patience on this one, folks.
Agreed. If I may, could I ask that people hold off on posting stories for this challenge, please. Just until we hear from Kev as to whether or not this is okay. Like I said, I don’t see a problem, as I believe this falls under Fair Use. But, at the same time, I don’t want to cause any problems for my favourite site. If necessary, I do have a backup challenge in mind. Thanks, all!
Good point, Robotech_Master. But I believe that this would fall under Fair Use, if my understanding of that policy is correct. If not, my apologies, and Ficlets and remove this at their leisure.
What can I say? I’m a romantic. I tried to keep things neutral, but I just had to have them wind up together. Will getting married was a last minute idea, though.
A couple of note for folks: 1) If you’re coming in here at the end, the story starts at http://ficlets.com/stories/25251. 2) When Jaime and Dave are casting spells, the ‘magic words’ they use are actual words in Esperanto. I just thought it would be a cool magical language. 3) 50?! I thought I was bad with the 29-part story I did! LOL Hope you all enjoyed it!
Yeah, I realized after I published this one that I had made an error, from my point of view. I had intended Alex to be part of the party from the beginning, but I had only made on brief reference to Alex in the 1st part of the story. sigh Live and learn, I guess. :)
I am not a Christian, and this time of year holds a different meaning to me than it does to others. But that doesn’t stop me from seeing this for the beautiful and powerful story that it is. Well done, as always! LoA
Wait… You mean I passed 150 before you?! Wow! Going to really have to think on this one. May give it until I get back to work on Sunday. Have a good one, congrats on 150, and here’s to looking forward to the next 150!
Glad you’re enjoying it. :) I’m thinking this one is going to turn into another Ficlets epic. (Eplet?) But no more 10-hour writing marathons! That just wiped me out. :D
“That’s two taboos in one shot, that is – asking a girl out at a funeral, and asking her out while she’s at work.” And at his mother’s funeral. Hat trick! Great job! Off to read the sequel.
Yeah, outside of writing, my favourite activity is singing. My friends tell me I’m pretty good (of course, they’re my friends, so they’re biased). So, yeah, music does show up a fair bit. :)
The thing I find amazing is that I had no plan what so ever when I started writing that series. I’m very much a stream of consciousness writer. Which drove my creative writing teachers in high school completely nuts! “Mr. Loewen, where is you story outline?” “I don’t have one.” “Then what did you use to write your story?” “Uh, my imagination.” (Actual conversation. :D )
Unfortunately, I don’t think I was able to get the important point across: The music just spontaneously erupts out of nowhere. It’s not him singing, it just shows up. I’m going to have to seriously re-think this. (And maybe I shouldn’t write when I’m so tired. LOL.)
Fabulous follow-up! I’m hoping this turns into a long running series. The sequels was better than the original, and the original was pretty damned good to begin with! LoA
That was decidedly cool. Very nicely thought out and executed. Keep up the great work! I’ve been dealing with computers for closing in on 30 years, and I completely missed the dates being in hex. Gods, I’m getting old! LOL! LoA
You know what my main inspiration is for getting past writer’s block? All the wonderful people here on Ficlets! Anytime I feel stumped for a story, I take a look at what others have written, and something always pops up. I may have no connection to what I’ve been reading (actually, it usually doesn’t), but you all are still my inspirations. Thank you!
Good gods, that brings back memories. An old AD&D character with a sentient sword and dagger. If they weren’t gossipping, they were arguing over who got to be in the right hand. :D Well done! LoA
“Tens of thousands of World of Warcraft III players went into withdrawal spasms.” LOL. As someone who doesn’t particularly care for WoW (I found it boring and over-rated), I find this line hilarious! And excellent job on this series. Can’t wait to see what she does when she’s finished the re-format. LoA
I definitely agree. So, I’m going to do the smart thing. I won’t even try to top it. I’ll just keep on writing. If I top it, wonderful. And if that remains the best story I’ll ever write, so be it! I’m proud of the work I did on that. A couple of parts I found a little clunky, but what can you do, n’est pas?
If anyone comes on here and starts posting the lyrics to Together Forever by Rick Astley, I’ll… I’ll… I guess I won’t do much, because I actually like that song. :D
I was going to stretch this out to 2 or 3 ficlets because I wanted to show how disturbing it was for her. But I creeped myself out in the process, and condensed it into on. I didn’t want to journey any further into Jack’s head than I needed.
Just a little history lesson, folks: Yes, Mary Eastey actually was tried and convicted of witchcraft, and hanged, along with many others, on Gallows Hill, September 22, 1692. Who says fantasy fiction can’t be educational? :D
I’ll make this easy for anyone coming in here. The start of this little (?) tale is at http://ficlets.com/stories/24926. 29 sections, beginning to end. A new record for me! Gods, this was supposed to be a 2- or 3-parter! Well, as long as you all enjoyed.
What have I gotten myself into? Another Ficlets epic? This was supposed to be a two or three, part story! LOL Ah, well. So long as people are enjoying it.
Hmmm… Not good. Makes me wonder if they’re paying more attention to their compatriot than they should be to the enemy. I sense an ambush in a nearby sequel. LoA
Just a thought for you (and this is just my view of things): all art, no matter how grand or how ridiculous, counts for something. If it makes even one person smile, or think, it’s worth while. This list made me smile. :) LoA
I can’t argue with that. As soon as I saw the title, I thought, “Oh, no!” Then I saw who wrote it, and I thought, “Oh, yes!” I was not disappointed. Really makes me want to see Kill Bill now. :D LoA
LOL. I love it! “A New Life” is right. I’m female?! Then, again, I do have a tendency to play female characters in video games. I don’t know why, but I tend to be more successful with them. Great job! LoA
As someone who firmly believes that, yes, they do exist, I love this story! This is just wonderful! And it’s so true. Most people don’t bother thinking about dragons, except maybe us followers of pagan paths or people from Asian cultures. (My in-laws are Filipino Catholics, and they didn’t bat an eye when I talked to them about our guardian dragons.) Well done! LoA
Oh, man. You captured a good portion of my teenage years there. I consider myself fortunate to have been a teenager in the 80’s. What a fabulous time! And the music! Well, what more need be said about that? Wonderful job!
You like to pretend you can write? I think this shows it’s more than mere pretending. I think you have an innate talent for it that can only grow as you work with it. Good job!
O, wow, that was fabulous, THX! In a way, I want to know what exactly she saw, but in another way, I think the story is perfect as it is. I’m not certain if I want to see a sequel or not! :D Fabulous job, as I have come to expect from you. LoA
Can’t say I blame him. :D Good job. I do admit, most of the stories I’ve read from you haven’t really caught my eye (personal opinion, no offence intended). But I think this one shows the potential you have to be an amazing writer. Keep it up! LoA
Meow. Meow meow meow. Meow, meow meow meow meow. Meow? :D Transflation: Great. Really good read. So, next up are goldfish. Takers? Great follow up! LoA
