Thanks, everybody! I’m pretty sure I didn’t make up “sleepsweat”. I know I’ve heard it (or read it) somewhere before.

YAY!! My favorite comment from folks is that their writing has improved by writing ficlets, and the A+ is icing on the cake! Congrats!

I am so sorry I almost ruined your marriage. Maybe you should write your wife a love letter on ficlets instead of me? Just kidding, I’m glad you wrote one to me.

  7. On The End:

This was indeed the very first ficlet. I wrote it before we even launched the site and liked it so much it was the first one I pasted in after we flipped the switch last year.

It’s provocative, but I wouldn’t call it trash. It needs some editing and work, but it’s definitely a story.

  11. On Terms of Endearment (SWEDED by MIKE and JERRY!):

You like me, you really like me!!

    Thanks, BA!

  12. On goodbye:

    posted 3 months ago

Lena, if people are bothering you on ficlets, please let me know. This is supposed to be a safe place to express yourself. If that’s not possible here, then something’s wrong. Please send me story examples (the id number works – that’s the last part of the http:// thing up there), and I’ll see what I can do.

  15. On Jealousy, thy Name is Man:

    posted 4 months ago

I’ve read several of your stories now, and you use a lot of similes. They’re not as strong as metaphors and you sometimes break the flow of the story by throwing in a simile that may convey the meaning, but has nothing to do with the story. Play with metaphor, and try to keep them consistent with the subject matter. See what happens!

  16. On Youth of Love or Love of Youth-Same thing!:

    posted 4 months ago

That simile on the second line, I have to say, is one I’ve never heard used before. Nice!

  17. On The Longing Afterlife:

    posted 4 months ago

I used to wonder what people would do all day if heaven really was clouds, harps and wings. I think you’re making a good case for reincarnation here!

Seriously, though – good job conveying her desire and sadness.

  19. On No More Promises:

I think every dad goes through that… Please don’t look at me like that kid, I’m just a guy. “Daddy” is way too much responsibility. My oldest keeps asking me questions with that look on his face like he knows I know the answer… and most of the time, I just don’t (he’s really freaky smart).

  20. On Insanity Encouraged (Acceptance Speech):

I tell people all the time I invented a holiday (cuz I really did), and when people ask what I do, instead of explaining it, I just say, “Oh, I’m a nerd, the web kind.”

It confuses them long enough for me to run away.

  26. On ;] :] :] [6 word memoir]:

    posted 4 months ago

I love the last one. Could mean lots of stuff, anticipation, a kid doing the “I’m going to hold my breath until I die” thing, or just pure anticipation. Good stuff!

  32. On 7.2:

  33. On Visit to Redditch :

I love this… but I keep giggling because I keep filling in odd locations for “in there”. A tilt-o-whirl? Ice cream van? The reptile house at the zoo? A tree? A swing set?

  34. On It Happens. (six word challenge):

  35. On To a Beautiful Boy (Six Word Memoir Challenge):

  48. On Bellow, the Hero:

    posted 5 months ago

OK, I rewrote it… I think the fight is a little more realistic now, and I didn’t worry about finishing it, but honestly, I think getting broadsided by Ulysses would do just about anyone one in.

  49. On Bellow, the Hero:

    posted 5 months ago

Well, I’m hoping someone runs with the fact that Howard thought he was going to die, but he’s only got a cut and a ballpoint pen sticking out of his arm, so there’s going to be an awkward moment in his future.

  50. On Bellow, the Hero:

    posted 5 months ago

I’m not terribly happy with this one, but the kitty had to be taken out so we can get on with the story, right?

  51. On The Girl Who Could Talk With Her Eyes:

  58. On Too Small A Planet:

    Nicely done!

  61. On The Insurgenceez Haz Beginned:

I apologize for this one. The idea came to me and I had to write it down…

  62. On Wine With Dinner:

    posted 5 months ago

I’ve heard it from friends who had parents or grandparents in World War 2, that the stories only came out when they had a little “lubricant” (or when they were very old). I can see not wanting to talk about those kinds of memories… and only going back in a bit of a fog.

  63. On Wine With Dinner:

    posted 5 months ago

Thanks, everybody! It’s not autobiographical, but is inspired by my mother-in-law (we don’t get her drunk at family dinners, I swear).

  71. On Ficlets Challenge #11: The Cavalry Arrives:

    Oops, I updated the title.

My favorite line from that movie was when McKinley had the cotton in his ears to keep the weevils out and shouted, “Tucumcari?! I thought you said ‘Two Come CARL’!”

  72. On Ficlets Challenge #11: The Cavalry Arrives:

    posted 9 months ago

I had to bring back Yoda and Lincoln from http://ficlets.com/stories/5363. Best pairing in history. They’d make a great buddy cop movie… Lincoln and Yoda. I mean, it just sounds right.

  73. On Remember Karen in Wartime:

    posted 9 months ago

It’s really funny if you imagine it as WWI soldiers… and lots of sobbing.

  74. On Collaborative Conference Bio:

    posted 10 months ago

This is an experiment. I hate writing bios for conferences, and I’m hoping someone can take my boring bio and build something funny out of it. Have at it! What has the fictional Kevin Lawver done?

  75. On Yoda'lling on.:

    posted 11 months ago

I thought for a minute that Yoda had turned into Joe Pesci in Goodfellas but you reeled him back in. ;)

  76. On Yoda meets Lincoln (dumbest story eva!!):

Yoda and Lincoln, two great tastes that go great together, or something like that.

  77. On Yoda Addresses The Gathering At Gettysburg:

Well done. You balanced the Lincoln and Yoda very well indeed.

  78. On Deathly Hallows: Part 5:

    posted 11 months ago

So you posted this on your blog and here? Ficlets is about writing fiction, not talking about fiction.

  79. On Mother's Funeral:

    posted 11 months ago

Is that four concurrent or consecutive lovers?

  80. On Yep:

    posted 11 months ago

It reminds me of a game I used to play in meetings. A friend and I gave each other a word we had to use during the meeting (“rhinoceros” or “grape jelly”). This would be a good twist – add iteration to it!

  81. On A Call for Help:

    posted 12 months ago

You know, I had dealt with his death and put all that grief behind me. I don’t know that I can handle it again. What’s going to happen?! (and I’m only partly kidding)

  82. On My 100th Ficlet and a Message: Your Choice:

    posted 12 months ago

Congrats!! And your sequel is worthy of so much more than 5 stars. I’ve been so tempted to say something, but I can’t tell if those weird little things are the dumbest things I’ve ever seen or the most brilliant…

  83. On Keeping the pieces:

    posted 12 months ago

I know it’s bad manners to say “ditto”... but yeah, nicely done!

  84. On The Wake:

    posted 12 months ago

I love that you took the original (which was me writing to someone I’d never really say that to in real life) and turned it around. The end feels a little rushed (which happens in 1024 characters), but the emotion is great!

  85. On Being a Better Person:

    posted 12 months ago

Nice! I love that you flipped the gender around (which is cool, because I didn’t explicitly say). The note of hope at the end is a nice touch.

  86. On Regaining strength:

    posted 12 months ago

Love it! Although, just cuz you said “shit” one time, you don’t have to mark it “mature” (unless you want to).

  87. On Me Walking Away:

  98. On God's Fist:

  99. On Tortilla Gets a Life:

  100. On God's Fist:

I’m pretty happy with where I switched tense (it was on purpose), and with a couple of the descriptions. Hopefully, it wasn’t too much. Feedback welcome!

  101. On Last Hours.:

    posted about 1 year ago

I had to follow this one up. It’s a lot like the first ficlet (and oddly enough with a picture of the same comet!). Check out http://ficlets.com/stories/1.

Great story, but why did they go up the hill??!! Why not find a basement, a hole, anything to try to survive? It doesn’t change the fact that it’s a good story – yours is certainly more poetic – but I practically yelled at my laptop, “Find cover, you idiots!” 8)

  102. On Lazaro's 96 Year Old Sister:

  108. On The Pain of Confusion:

I assume he’s in the army if they’re going on patrol. They’re called “units” or “platoons” (unit generically). Squadrons are only for pilots. Other than the lingo, this is a great sequel!

  109. On Hello, baby:

    posted about 1 year ago

Pretty darned accurate, and I was just the dad. It’s so much easy with the second… you know you don’t have to be ready for everything at the beginning. Just be able to keep the little loaf warm, fed and clean and you’re ahead of the game.

  110. On The Strategic Valor of the iPod in Iraq:

  114. On When It Ends For One, It Ends For Both:

Ged, I was looking for photos tagged “leaving”, and this one caught my eye. There’s no literal association (I don’t think they were on a mountain road for the conversation), but I think the photo works: bleak, cold, and there are clouds on the horizon.

  115. On this is a test ficlet:

    posted about 1 year ago

  117. On Announcements:

    posted about 1 year ago

Thanks for writing a sequel! I love the idea of divorce announcements. They could cut down on those uncomfortable moments. “Hey, how are you and Sara?” “Yeah, well, we got divorced.” – then uncomfortable silence. No more of that, thank you!
