I agree with THX – it really works to start it where you did. And it just has the great feel of a vet who’s perhaps a little haunted by his time in the sub. Loved it. And Yay ficlet nirvana!

  2. On Monkey Versus Robot, Part 3:

Oh man. So the whole battle was completely futile. The pain, the bitter thoughts of revenge, to cold, methodical hate – all ended with Godzilla’s foot. Did not see that coming. Great trilogy BoS ;)

  3. On Monkey Versus Robot, Part 2:

    posted 3 days ago

Ohh cold, mean robot. Same story device used here but turned on its ear by giving us the robot view of things. It seems so malicious by giving the women monkeys a slower death. Bad robot.

  4. On Monkey Versus Robot, Part 1:

    posted 3 days ago

Great job of storytelling here, covering a lot of time in a short space. I can picture a fierce monkey standing among the trees looking at the robot, reflecting on everything that brought him to this point. Poignant and a little sad. Ok more than a little sad. Bambi sad.

Great dialogue! It felt like a mix of those ‘world’s dumbest criminals’ stories, the makings of a Fark headline, and the setup to a Steven Wright joke. I lol’d :) And I’m very happy you ficleted :)

  9. On I kinda need some advise:

    posted about 1 month ago

How can I put this politely…. I would encourage you to read the FAQ about Ficlets which talks about what this site is geared for. It isn’t intended to be a place to blog, or to push a writer’s real ficlet off the ‘Recent Ficlets’ list in order to ask for love advice. This isn’t the place for that stuff. Try writing a story about your angst. You wouldn’t draw the ire of cranky ppl like me if you went about it that way ;)

  10. On Finish the Job (Scavenger Hunt Challenge):

It sure is. I liked the show too. It was just finding it’s feet when they yanked it. Stupid sci-fi channel. But the book, oh the books. I loves them. I finished up the last one (so far) last week and actually felt mild depression that there was no more Harry until the next one comes out.

I can’t resist. Ana – you so totally rock for coming up with this excellent challenge!

    Year I was born – 1971
    1st Pet – Spooky
City I was born – Grand Island
Best Friend – Meechie (Who would love the idea of being the baddie)
Fave Book – Small Favor by Jim Butcher, part of the Harry Dresden series :)
    Song – Creep
    Fave # – 42
Nickname – “Sweetheart” – I don’t really have a proper nick. But my Grampa always calls me ‘sweetheart’ :)

  25. On Re: Ficlets of Change:

    posted about 1 month ago

I think we’ll have to agree to disagree. Ficlets is helping me focus on my ‘Magnum Opus’ as I try to turn it into an actual novel. It’s helped me experiment with the story, and work out plot points. This place has helped me the way no other writing tip or trick ever has, and if it means I have a 38 (and growing) part series on here then so be it. It’s not even a tiny fraction of what’s available here. My view is if series’ aren’t your thing, don’t read them. But don’t quash it down for others either.

  26. On Waiting for Klaatu:

So I saw this story on Fark about the possibility of the end of Christianity if aliens were proven to exist. And then I came to Ficlets and read this. I heart the intarwebs.

Totally love the supernatural viewpoint you took on the story. Very clever!

  27. On Friggatriskaidekaphobia:

  28. On Re: Ficlets of Change:

    posted about 1 month ago

I take exception to the single author series “bastardization.” It’s probably subjective, but I enjoy reading and writing single author series here on Ficlets as much as I enjoy multi-author series. I don’t feel single author series’ are hurtful to Ficlets and, at least in my case, it’s been a godsend in stimulating the one decent story idea I’ve ever been able to sustain. Sometimes, Ficlets inspires a bigger idea than can fit in 1,024 characters. An author should run with it if they can.

  31. On Griselda:

    posted about 1 month ago

Ok first? I freaking love the name “Griselda.” Perfect perfect name for the kid. Second, man this is creepy, a good creepy. I love the heck out of it. Seems almost like it’s either going to be a clinical attempt at exorcism with the asbestos suits and Doctor Mandrose, or else the Doc and company are going to perform insidious experiments on poor Griselda. Did I mention I love that name? :) – Either way, this is really outstanding.

  32. On Watching a Thunderstorm :

Therein lies the problem for me with writing this as a novel and keeping up with it in Ficlets. I know in my head where Simone is, but I don’t have enough room to fit her in to each ficlet chapter. So please forgive me for the odd character blips :)
And action coming very soon. I’m in transitionland atm.

  35. On The Photograph:

I think this is the would-be scene when John hands Sarah Connor’s pic to Kyle (I freaking love Terminator) and it’s done beautifully. Gritty nostaligia in the midst of battle. And I actually like the use of ‘kid’ because it evokes a sort of mentor-mentee relationship from the get-go. Great job Bar!

Well this ficlet came out a whole lot different than I had intended when I started it. For the record, I wanted to try my hand at describing something in as much detail as possible and then see if you guys could guess what I was describing.

I had pudding with my lunch today so I went with that. But the ficlet went in a weird direction and I couldn’t resist the payoff at the end :) Anyway. Just a bit of silliness.

  57. On John in Hell:

I try to at *least rate every ficlet I read and commenting is fun, esp. knowing that you might be encouraging someone who’s gunshy about writing, or who truly blows your mind with their excellence. And as someone who’s working on a series, I can tell you that getting at least a comment or two or a rating on each part of the series is incredibly helpful. Sometimes wonder, when no one comments on a part of it whether the series is worth continuing or should I end it. With no comments, it’s hard to know.

  100. On R_M's Ficlets Best Practices #5: Edit Yourself:

    posted 3 months ago

Hey Bar – If you’re working on something in draft mode, don’t publish it there. Just finish it, and cut and paste it into a whole new ficlet. That way it will always show up straight away in the Most Recent list. Yeah you’ll have it there in drafts for all time (or at least until they suss out a way to delete ficlets) but that doesn’t matter. Drafts are fine for working on a ficlet over a long period of time. Just don’t publish from the draft.

  101. On R_M's Ficlets Best Practices Introduction:

    posted 3 months ago

Totally agree on wishing Ficlets had a forum. And you’re brave for writing these. A helpful, etiquette-ful addendum to the Ficlet FAQ is a good idea. I know I’ve got pet peeves around here too but I’m not brave enough to voice ‘em. Mostly I’m just grateful this place exists, even when someone floods the most recent list with a flurry of sequels which doesn’t give others a chance to be on the page long. Sort of wish there was a short time limit between posting stories.

  102. On CherryPop Can't Save Them All:

    posted 3 months ago

Oh I’ll probably deal with the bounty thing either in the blog or in the actual story I’m writing on this :) Not sure if it will make it to ficlets.

  103. On From the Case Files of Celeste Bellini, Vampire Psychiatrist: The Liam O'Connor Sessions (4):

    posted 4 months ago

I didn’t expect the religious angle. It’s interesting to think that Liam might have been religious. As usual this is well-written and introduces a new layer to Liam’s character.
One minor thing – and don’t quote me on this because I’m not religious, but I think the term ‘pastor’ is used among Protestants rather than Catholics… ah yeah, I heart Google. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pastor
It just jarred me a little for some reason.

  104. On Philosophical Questions and Vampire Tomes:

Not a silly sequel at all! Wonderful dialogue that showed perfectly that when you’re nervous or about to do something serious, you make jokes. I like this splinter set of sequels off BARomero’s Vampirism guide. It’s fun!

  108. On Zombie Types [Stovo's Zombie Challenge]:

    posted 4 months ago

A friend suggested I put a ficlet from my CherryPop series in this challenge since it’s zombie-centric. So here ‘tis. Thanks for reading :) – Yes it’s a duplicate ficlet. Thought it would be easier to enter it this way than linking it in Stovo’s comments. Hope that’s ok.

  109. On Tapper (80's Arcade Challenge):

    posted 4 months ago

I don’t get it. Not that the ficlet isn’t good, because it’s great. But I have a feeling this refers to a game I never played… OHHH. I just Googled it. Now I get it! Very clever!!

  110. On The Resurrection of Liam O'Connor, Part 4:

    posted 4 months ago

Oh there will be sequels :) I need to ask though, am I not being clear on who’s POV this part of the story is? I don’t want there to be confusion, because currently, it’s CherryPop’s father, Desmond – who’s a he – telling the tale. Just wondering if I need to go back and make that clearer…

Is he bothered that he hit a woman or that he hit someone at all? If a ficlet makes me that curious, it’s teh awesome.

  125. On The Death of Liam O'Connor, Part 6:

If you mean the blast o’ magic from Alexander’s staff then yeah, I worried about the similarities of that to the Avada Kedavra curse. It’s going to be difficult to avoid stuff like that, esp. for me because I’ve never written this sort of genre before. But I’m working on this story in book-form as well, so I when I have the chance to expand on these ficlets I’ll take care to try and avoid stuff like that :)

  126. On Threesome with a Robot:

Er, to address White Hat, it wasn’t my intent to stigmatize a mental illness. I was just thinking about what it would be like if psychopaths really were a different kind of human and they coexisted with “regular” humans. Obviously in the ficlet format, there isn’t enough room to expand on the thought in one entry but in my head, there are good and bad psychopaths. This guy in the story could be a bad one and maybe David’s talent is telling the good from the bad. Who knows.
