“The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation.” – Thoreau
I don’t know that Norman is quiet, but he’s desperate. I really got the sense that I knew his angst came from being somehow emasculated, but I can’t say where.
Before I get any questions, ratings or comments I’ll say that the title and the first line come from the Zooey Deschanel-led musical act “She And Him” and their tune “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?”.
It’s not much of a tale in terms of action or description, but today is sunny and writing this story made me incredibly happy, just like the song when I listen to it.
I do my “Ficlet Friday” to learn, but also to have some fun.
Keep up the good work, james. I think this is a really solid first effort.
If anything I think it starts off stronger than it ends. We get that Steve is distant and duty-bound to walk the dogs, but maybe give us something more than just the repeated “midnight” to sell the whole thing.
Maybe the reaction of Steve or the dogs.
And I’m just making it up as I go along too. Feel free to take my constructive criticism w/ a grain of salt.
This makes me feel comforted that I’m not the only one who feels judged and uncomfortable around intelligent wild animals. You’ve really made the narrator seem less logical and human than the elements.
I really dug the bit about sign language and braille.
You can see why those Elephants don’t like him, and I’m assuming they don’t.
