Yeah, I hear ya. I had two endings & I liked this one more, but it is confusing.

  2. On Odds:

    posted 4 months ago

Love the metaphor, but I got a bit confused at the end.

  3. On New Arrival:

    posted 4 months ago

I really dig this. I need to write something spiritual.

    Very cool.

  4. On Mark and Clara:

    posted 4 months ago

I think it’s beautiful and poignant and moving and, above all, honest to how folks in relationships communicate.

    Really well done!

  5. On Networks Without Tongue:

    posted 4 months ago

    Perfect. I love relationship dialogs.

  6. On Mellow Yellow:

    Thx, james.

Unfortunately, I think it means something. Though, likely not as actually analogous or straight-forward as you might think.

  8. On Bus Ride:

    posted 4 months ago

I’m really intrigued. I might just have to write a sequel.

  9. On Caldera:

You know, I’m going to Maui next month and I’m taping this Ficlet to the guide book. Brilliant!

  10. On Hooked on Phonics:

    posted 4 months ago

Thx, Rusty. It was really just a thought experiment that dealt with a funny line I had rolling around in my head.

I think I might even do a prequel or sequel.

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” – John Lennon

    This is a great snapshot.

  12. On Norman's routine:

    posted 4 months ago

“The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation.” – Thoreau

I don’t know that Norman is quiet, but he’s desperate. I really got the sense that I knew his angst came from being somehow emasculated, but I can’t say where.

  13. On The End:

Thx, Rusty. I’ve been working more on how I write dialog.

  14. On #220 and #221:

Steampunk unrequited love. I loved it!

  15. On Yesterday Girl:

I really like this story. Strong first ever.

I’ll add more flavor on your blog post, but I’m glad more folks are playing along now.

  16. On A Loaded Gun in the Mailbox:

    Clever!

    I love Ficlet Friday!

I totally dig the whole Looney Tunes/Warner Brothers cartoon angle of his interaction with the gun.

    Nice surprise ending as well.

  17. On She And Him:

    posted 5 months ago

Before I get any questions, ratings or comments I’ll say that the title and the first line come from the Zooey Deschanel-led musical act “She And Him” and their tune “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?”.

It’s not much of a tale in terms of action or description, but today is sunny and writing this story made me incredibly happy, just like the song when I listen to it.

I do my “Ficlet Friday” to learn, but also to have some fun.

    This was FUN!

  18. On Midnight?:

    posted 5 months ago

Keep up the good work, james. I think this is a really solid first effort.

If anything I think it starts off stronger than it ends. We get that Steve is distant and duty-bound to walk the dogs, but maybe give us something more than just the repeated “midnight” to sell the whole thing.

Maybe the reaction of Steve or the dogs.

And I’m just making it up as I go along too. Feel free to take my constructive criticism w/ a grain of salt.

  19. On The End:

Thx, Will. That means a lot.

  20. On Automatic Anubis:

    posted 5 months ago

Hilariously funny! I need to get some of my inner Kevin Smith out and write something dialog-driven.

    Great effort!

  21. On Moving the package around:

    posted 5 months ago

    Simple. Concise. Funny.

I need to write something in this vein next week.

Great first effort. Feels good to flex your fiction muscles, doesn’t it?

If I could offer one thought: it seems to end a bit abruptly.

  22. On Unnecessary Accessory:

    posted 6 months ago

Good call. I’ll give it some thought and some effort over the weekend.

    Thx, Will!

  23. On The Flying Lie:

    posted 6 months ago

You know, you snookered me. I thought I had this one pegged and you threw me for a loop.

Sheisters are all the same, aren’t they? Insulated by willful ignorance and righteousness of purpose. At least that’s what I got.

Process point: you get the fact that Ficlets take place “in media res” and I need to do that more often/embrace that. Thanks for The Flying Lie.

  24. On Oh, The Elephants Know:

4 stars, for the love of Ficlets!

  25. On Oh, The Elephants Know:

Damnit! Didn’t mean to give only one star. 4!

    Pushing away from the keyboard.

  26. On Oh, The Elephants Know:

Substitute elephants for elements. Typing is apparently beyond my grasp today.

    Liked it quite a bit.

  27. On Oh, The Elephants Know:

This makes me feel comforted that I’m not the only one who feels judged and uncomfortable around intelligent wild animals. You’ve really made the narrator seem less logical and human than the elements.

I really dug the bit about sign language and braille.

You can see why those Elephants don’t like him, and I’m assuming they don’t.

  28. On Bed-ridden:

  29. On No More Friday Nights:

    What does LoA mean?

  30. On Call It A Keepsake:

    posted 6 months ago

I could learn much here. The immediacy. The moment.

Great job. I might just have to muck it up with a continuation.

  31. On Expletive Deleted:

    posted 6 months ago

Thanks, Will. I really had to do some pruning of the initial concept I’d written to fit in the 1024 limit, so I agree on the whole editing point.

I’m a verbose dude by nature and my natural inclination is to over-write, so I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one.

I may eventually use this as the jumping-off point for NaNoWriMo this year, but I don’t want to paint myself into a corner.

Thx as always for the feedback!

  32. On Diving on Jupiter:

    posted 6 months ago

Yeah, this is pretty much pushing me over the edge to start sharing more (read: any) of my writing in Ficlet form and otherwise.
