Book Tour Diary #14: In the Airport

First off: Yes, I bought a new laptop. It’s very nice, thanks for asking.

Second off: I think it’s something of a minor miracle that today is the first day in the tour that I’ve experienced a major airline delay.

And it’s not even that bad of a delay: My flight to Washington DC on one airline was canceled due to mechanical problems, but I got there early enough that they were able to put me on a later flight on another airline. A two-hour delay, which is annoying but not horrible, especially considering that I have no connection to catch and I had no plans except to get into my hotel and sleep. If you have to have a delay, this is the way to have it.

Believe me, I’m grateful. I don’t really know any other person who usually has as bad luck with delayed flights as I do—if there’s any chance to make me miss a connecting flight, fate usually takes it and I end up trapped in Detroit or Pittsburgh, camping out overnight in the terminal for the first flight of the morning. Not much fun.

But my luck has held for most of this trip. I’ve had a few delays here or there, but never much more than 20 minutes or so, and I was never in danger of missing any of my tour engagements because of them. All things considered, if this one delay is the worst that happens, I’ll take it.

Of course, now watch: I’ve just jinxed myself, because the only other flight I have on this tour is the one in which I fly home, next Thursday. And yes, it has a connecting flight. I’m asking for trouble, I am.

I had vaguely noticed that this trip was notably lacking in your usual quotient of stranded-at-the-airport stories. Here’s hoping the last 24 hours are just a blip in a relatively problem-free book tour. And be honest: you wanted a new laptop anyway, right?

Well, in fact, I DID want a new laptop; the previous had been laboring hard for a while now. However, as much as I wanted one, I didn’t really want to have to PAY for one. It’s easier to drop that much cash when it becomes something of a necessity.
