Die Ficlets!

No, that’s not “Die Ficlets,” as in “Let push Ficlets down the stairs and laugh as it bounces” but “the Ficlets” in the German language. Which is to say that the idea of Ficlets can no longer be contained by just one language: We have this Ficlet, written in German (and with both a sequel and a prequel). You know, I took seven years of German, in high school and college, and yet my facility in that language is so bad, I had to run the story through an online translator to find out what it’s about. Which provides lines like these:

Tomorrow it could read their history then probably everywhere in the InterNet. Including photos of their thumb and their face in full arcose, derailed.

I’m sure it reads much better in the original. But perhaps not as mysteriously.

Mark Twain would have loved the amusement value of online translators. Have you played with your translated texts of Old Man’s War much?

That would mean typing them in. That’s work!

I do use it for web reviews of the books that I find in other languages. That’s always amusing.

I just want to know why that German ficlet is apparently the most popular ficlet on the entire site. Please, can’t somebody tell me what their secret is?

Should I start babelfishing my ficlets into some foreign language to gain more popularity?

I think the secret is that this ficlet was mentioned on the blog, the end. Which, actually, brings me to a question: how are the “featured ficlet” for the main page selected? Is it just snagged from one of the “most” categories?

I think there should be a way for folks on ficlets to suggest other authors (yes, not your own) pieces for feature. That way, a single ficlet that might be overlooked by most can garner some attention. For instance, I’m loving Cobweb’s Brass, Ivory and Springs seriel (search by clockpunk and you’ll find it, he’s the only one using that tag…sadly). But I have no way of bringing it to broader attention (you know, other than mentioning it in a comment like this one).
