We have another installment of Ficlets Spotlight, in which a professional writer contributes a set of Ficlets for you to play with and enjoy. Today in the spotlight: Brian Francis Slattery. Slattery is a science fiction writer who came into the field in an unusual way: through international relations and economics, where he developed a reputation as an editor of journals and publications.
His first novel Spaceman Blues: A Love Song, arrives in stores this August, and is already attracting the sort of advance notice most new authors would strangle a puppy for – for example, this blurb from none other than Harlan Ellison: “What a breathless, mad, tornado of words! When it shakes itself awake the earth trembles and the helpless reader is dragged gladly into its light. I haven’t had this much fun with a book in years.” Yeah, that’s not too bad.
However, you don’t have to wait until August to read (and add to) Brian’s work: It’s here on Ficlets now:
Telescope: “In the photograph, the bullet is frozen two feet from her head…”
Invisible Wars: “When I was eight and Javier was nine, I threw the ball to him in the dirt lot behind our school. Javier vanished before the ball hit the ground…”
Asbestos: “The phone was still ringing. We both looked at the wall, and Julia had an idea. She got a hammer and took some good hard swings at the wall…”
Provocative and fun – have fun playing with these.
