Introducing Myself

Kevin’s introduced himself, so I should as well—Hi, I’m John Scalzi, and I’ll be one of the hosts of the Ficlets area, and one of the contributors to this blog. Nice to meet you.

What things will we be talking about here in the Ficlets blog? In no particular order:

1. We’ll be highlighting intriguing Ficlets we find on the site;

2. Sometimes we might suggest a theme or post a picture to help along Ficlets (we’ll file those under “Inspiration”);

3. We’ll talk about the craft and the business of writing;

4. We’ll discuss events and personalities in the publishing world (with a spotlight on fiction, naturally enough);

5. We’ll post interviews with published authors on a hopefully regular basis, and maybe even get a few of them to post ficlets of their own for you to read and write sequels to;

6. And I suspect occasionally we’ll just get goofy and post silly things.

The point is we intend to gave fun with Ficlets and with the blog, on a daily basis, so I hope you’ll also come by daily and check us out.

Now, who am I and why am I qualified to blather on this particular blog? Well, I’ll tell you, after the jump.

So, more about me. First, a picture:

Don’t worry, I’m not actually this scowly in real life.

I’m a writer, and more to the point for the Ficlets site, I’m a published fiction author. In fiction, I write science fiction primarily, because I love me them aliens. Probably my most well-known novel at this point is Old Man’s War, which was nominated for a Hugo (that’s a notable book award in the science fiction genre) in 2006. I was also nominated for, and won, the Campbell Award for best new science fiction writer this last year. I have a plaque, it’s looks like a cheeseboard. My current novel is The Android’s Dream, and I’ll have a new novel, The Last Colony out this April.

In addition to fiction, I also write non-fiction books as well, and am in fact in the process of updating an astronomy book I wrote, The Rough Guide to the Universe. The second edition of this book should be out later this year.

I’m also a blogger and have been one since 1998, which was so long ago they didn’t call blogs “blogs”; they called them “online diaries.” Those were the days. Right now I have two (other) blogs—one called By The Way, which I write for AOL Journals, AOL’s blogging community, and another called Whatever, which is on my own site.

I also write other stuff, but I think that’s enough to establish I do this writing thingie on a fairly serious basis. I’m looking forward to talking writing to you all here on the Ficlets, so I hope you’ll check on a daily basis—and that you won’t be afraid to comment!
