It’s no secret that more books than ever are being published these days – some irony for people who think print is dying – but just how many books are being published in the US every year? A whole damn lot: Publishers Weekly has an article listing the number at 291,920 books published in 2006 (up from a mere 282,500 in 2005).
Given numbers like these, it’s not too surprising to find out that the average book sells fewer than a thousand copies—and if you’re selling 5,000, you’re doing okay.
On the other hand, this must be encouraging for aspiring authors. If nearly 300,000 books are being published each year, why not yours?
