Now That's a Book Trailer!

The hot new way for publishers to spend their money there days is on “book trailers” – little videos for novels intended to entice readers to bookstores like movie trailers are supposed to entice you back into movie theaters. Your book trailers will range in quality from close to homemade to something very professional looking, but I suspect none of them look as good as these book trailers, which were made for Greg Bear’s science fiction classic Eon, by a bunch of members of the CGSociety, the society for digital arts.

In other words, this is what the geeks who do digital special effects can do with their spare time. Here’s the winning clip. Prepared to be wowed (and to have reasonably high bandwidth). Clearly I need -sucker- convince these folks to do a trailer for one of my books, because my own attempts are, shall we say, not nearly as cinematic.

But your video trailer has sheep, which always garner bonus points.

If someone can find it, years past there was a video trailer done for Douglas Clegg’s Neverland by the artist Caniglia (http://www.caniglia-art.com/) which I remember being beautiful.

These video trailers are pretty cool, but I think for me a better “trailer” for a book would be/is a text excerpt from the book that makes me want to read further. Maybe something with some good bits from the book that shows off the action, but doesn’t give everything away.

Well John, (oh, it’s me, Teeisme) when You tube comes out with awards for the worst book trailer video’s, I do believe they’ll call them The Scalzzies.
