Welcome to Ficlets!

Hi, my name is Kevin Lawver, and this is the ficlets blog. There is so much to say about ficlets, what it is, who worked on it with me to help make it happen, and what I hope for it to be that I almost don’t know where to start.

I guess I’ll start with what a “ficlet” is. It’s a story, a very short story. You’ve got anywhere between 64 and 1,024 characters to tell a story, complete with beginning, middle and end. Wait, maybe not…. my favorite thing about ficlets is that there doesn’t really have to be a beginning, middle or end. You can leave that to someone else to write. You can write a sequel or prequel to any ficlet on the site, turning your tiny story into a part of a large ongoing narrative that could splinter or shift at any point.

Why ficlets? I’m a frustrated writer. I’m too busy being a nerd at work to write stories anymore. But, I sometimes have five or ten minutes at work during lunch or a break where I could write something… but not usually a long or complete something. I wanted a place where I could come play – find inspiration in pictures, phrases or other stories, where I wouldn’t have to start from scratch when I had time to write. That’s hopefully what we’ve done, or at least started to do.

One last thing. You’ll notice at the bottom of the page, the following paragraph:

Site content licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.5 License.

That’s really important to notice and to understand. Because we’re using photos from Flickr (who we love), and because all of your stories can serve as inspiration for other stories, all the stories created on the site are licensed under Creative Commons. This means that anyone can come along and use your story in another work of art, and you can take stories on this site and use them in other media without fear. We think Creative Commons is a good thing, and hope you do too.

We’ve got big things planned for these little stories. Keep reading, and join in the fun.
