What Makes a Good Author Blog

The Penguin Blog – which is not written by penguins as far as I know, but is merely the official corporate blog of Penguin Books – offers up its list of things writer blogs should be to be successful. They are:

1) It should be personal – but not mundane.
2) The author should write about their work as well as their interests.
3) They should be entertaining company.
4) Posts should be regular and frequent.

In other words, basically what anyone should do to make their blog interesting and readable. Of course, saying that these are the things people authors should do is the easy part. You’ll note the Penguin blog doesn’t go into specifics on how to be “entertaining company,” however. See. That’s the tricky part.

Also, the Penguin blog says nothing about the importance of posting pictures of your cat. Trust me. You’ll need pictures of your cat.

I don’t own a cat. Will a carefully-selected series of lolcat image macros suffice?

Yes, I believe that should be sufficient. Make sure they’re super funny.
