Many folks who want to be a writer want to do writing as a full-time gig, but I think it’s useful for writers to do other things as well. For fiction writers, having an area of expertise and give a “real world” feeling to your fiction, and for non-fictions writers, it’s useful because you can use your writing skills to bring to life that non-writing part of your life.
I bring this up because as an object example of this, I present Jim MacDonald’s blog piece on why you really want to wear seatbelts. Jim is a noted writer of science fiction and fantasy, but he’s also done time as a emergency medical technician – so when he talks about precisely why it’s good to wear that belt, he’s talking from his experience as the guy who has to pick people up when they haven’t. As a result, it’s one of the more convincing pieces of seatbelt advice I’ve read in a while. See if you don’t agree.
