The Hartford Courant – that’s a newspaper, you know, one of those old skool media, yo – offered up some of its precious, precious newshole to let some writers kvetch about the blog universe and whether it was a help or a hindrance to them in their careers. Thus you have author Michael Patrick McDonald saying he’s had enough of this whole online writing thing, while Elinor Lipman worries that she’s not blogging enough. As I’ve not heard of her, I can’t help but think she’s right about that. Then again, she’s got a book that’s about to be made into a movie, so maybe she doesn’t actually need me to know who she is at all. Fair enough.
I’m one of those authors who happens to believe the online world is a writer’s friend, but I can’t help think that it’s possible to think too much about it. My feeling about it is that at this point in time it’s still possible to have a perfectly cromulent writing career without ever once stepping (virtual) foot onto the Web, so people who feel like being online is an imposition on their time or personal space should just let it be for the people who want it. Time spent obsessing about the Web is time spent not writing – which is of course probably why so many writers do it.
