You know, I don’t always appreciate that there’s sometimes this feeling that writers – because we’re bookish and always in our heads thinking up stuff – are not too connected to the real world. But then I go and do something like I did yesterday, when I showed up to a local library for a speaking engagement last night and introduced myself to the librarian.
“Oh, wonderful,” she said. “We’re so glad you’re here. But you know, you’re not actually supposed to be here until tomorrow.” And then she showed me the flier they made up for my appearance, which has me appearing tonight (which was tomorrow, yesterday). And all I did was stare at the flier blankly and realize that some part of my brain was thinking that yesterday was today, for no particularly good reason other than that I hadn’t checked what day it was recently.
So, uh, yeah. All that stuff you hear about writers being a little flaky? Kinda true. Sorry about that. On the other hand, you can bet I’m going to be there tonight.
