You Never Forget Your First New York Times Bestseller

Young Adult book author Cassandra Clare (who, incidentally, will be the subject of a Ficlets Author interview at some point in the reasonably near future) got a nice surprise when her debut novel City of Bones showed up on the New York Times Children’s Bestsellers List at number eight – that’s a heck of a debut if you can get it. So naturally, she had to blog about it, and the reaction of her friends, family and business associates to her good fortune:

Me: Mom, guess what?
Mom: Did something bad happen? Have you broken your leg?
Me: No, I’m on the New York Times bestseller list!
Mom: That’s nice, dear.
Me: Nice is what you said when I won the bronze medal in ping-pong in the fourth grade Olympics.
Mom: You were so cute back then!

If there’s one thing you can depend on, it’s that your mother will always be happy for you, in ping-pong or in publishing.

Her response to her agent telling her the good news is interesting, too, but I’ll let you link through to see what that was.
