"Wait," I said. "You're joking, right?" He shook his head. "I'm afraid not." Hannah looked like she was about to cry. Or was it more of an I'm-going-to-jump-out-of-this-car kind of look.
I wrapped my fingers around hers, squeezing them with assurance.
"It'll turn out okay," I whispered to her, like a sister's supposed to. She smoothed her hair, making sure it wasn't frizzing out. She always bothered to straighten it. I just let it be.
"Girls," the officer said from the front. "I'll assure you that everything's going to be all right. Got it?" We nodded in unision, though I knew neither she, nor I, believed him.
