  <subtitle>I woke up to an annoying buzzing sound. 

This was remarkable, because until this morning, sounds were just sounds. I had never been annoyed before. Or happy, or cranky, or confused. I had never been bored with eating sap, sap, sap, nothing but sap. I had never been thankful for the ants' protection or disgusted by the fact that they eat my... well, let's not go there. I had never been scared when a gust of wind almost blew me off a stem and into who knows where. 

Perhaps the worst thing about my newfound sentience was the absolute, driving need in me to figure out just what exactly that nasty buzzing sound was.</subtitle>
