Comments on 'It's all in the timing (Challenge by numbers)'

_December 21st, 2012. About teatime._

They couldn't say they hadn't been warned, but just in case, a clarion trumpet call resounded across the world; a pure clean tone, that even the deaf heard. The skies darkened as the Sun blackened, and the moon turned a lurid blood red.

And then a deep voice spoke from the skies:

_HARK, MORTALS, FOR THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT IS UPON YOU. PREPARE YOURSELVES FOR-_

"Er, excuse me?" came a lone voice from below.

_WHAT?_ came the terse reply.

"Well, is this the end of the world as predicted by the Mayans?"

_INDEED. THE END OF THE 13TH B'AK'TUN CYCLE._

"Right. Only," the small voice continued, hesitantly, "which calendar are you going by?"

_CALENDAR?_

"The proleptic Gregorian calendar?" the voice persisted, "Really, you should be using a GMT-correlation based on a JDN of 54285. Which would make it the 23rd, not the 21st."

There was a momentary pause, before the skies started to lighten.

_I'LL SEE YOU IN A COUPLE OF DAYS,_ said the voice in the Heavens, a touch grumpily.

I see the 2012 a lot on other forums, and it worries me how many people actually think it’ll happen; when I saw the date discrepancy, it about wrote itself. No, I’ve no idea what the proleptic Gregorian calendar or any of that is ;)

There is actually a story very similar to this (by whom I can’t remember offhand) where God initiates Judgment day and Gabriel complains that the nations are all using different calendars. God postpones until all calendars are unified and then the devil (as R.E.Man) sets about to unify the calendars.
