The dry sand stretched out as far as I could see. There was so much of it, and nothing else. I could almost smell it. My eyes ached from the brightness of the sun. Its heat beat down on me, causing beads of sweat to form and make my now soggy clothes cling to my skin.

I guessed I had been stranded for a little more than 24 hours. How could that bastard have left me here? Just when I thought I could trust him.

There was a great deal of pain each time I swallowed and it felt like sandpaper was rubbing against the soft tissues of my raw throat. My tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth from lack of liquid.

The bite on my leg was the most painful, though. It throbbed and stung, and carried this pain throughout my entire body. I could feel it in each organ, it ran through my blood. Like someone was hitting me with a bat and stabbing me at the same time.

I sat down on the hard, burning ground, caughing as more sand got into my parched lungs. All I could do was stay in the silence and hope to be saved.

I screamed when I saw the bullet miss Wesley’s head by an inch. Everyone immediately fell to the ground as yet another bullet flew through the air.

I screamed again when I saw that the shooter was Justin.

His eyes darted back and forth, scanning the room. The gun in his hand shook violently. He had snapped, I knew it. But, was he doing this because of me?

And then I realized it. What if he had seen Nick and I kissing? What if he was out to kill us both?

My heart began to race and sweat poured down my face.

Luckily, the police came a second later. Thank god the hotel had plenty of security guards.

“Drop your weapon!” was all they had to say, and Justin sank to his knees, crying.

“I saw them!” Justin screamed as the police stood him up and handcuffed him. “I saw you kiss him, Emily! Then he’s got the nerve to threaten me?! How could you do this to me, Emily?!”

He was shoved into the police car and driven away. Once the car was out of sight, the entire room turned toward Nick and I.

She was the second victim that night.

The killings had started three months ago, when he was hired for the job.

He scrambled to pick up the broken glass, frantically looked around the room to find something to clean up the blood with. What would he do with the body?

About an hour later, Garret Latherson emerged from the office building. He silently walked back to his appartment, unoticed by everyone on the busy street.

He never turned on the lights in his appartment either. The brightness hurt his eyes. It never used to, until he took this part. He felt like something had taken over his soul, screwing with his brain. And, when he heard that voice…

It was the worst feeling in the world that he could do nothing about.

Sitting on the couch, Garret looked down at his hands. Even though he had scrubbed them clean, he could still see the blood.

How much longer could he go on like this before the cops found out?

“Look how nice this ice sculpture is!” Gwen exclaimed, trying to find something that would clear our minds of Justin.

Kevin laughed at Gwen’s desparate attempt. “Look, Emily, whatever Justin has done to you, we had no idea, or else we never would have invited him. And, we’re really sorry about what’s happened so far tonight.”

“It’s not your fault,” I said.

“Wes, we also apologize for how rude Justin was to you.”

“Don’t worry.”

“But,” said Joe, “we do have something that just might make it up to you.”

They led us to the very back of the room, where a brand new drum set and guitar sat.

Joe announced, “These are some early Christmas presents.”

I ran to my new guitar. It was pink with blue and purple swirls, and had my name engraved on it.

Wes stared at her drums in shock.

“That’s not all,” Nick said. “We know that Christmas vacation is almost over, and Emily has to go back home soon. But, when summer comes around, we’re going back on tour. And, we’d like you to tour with us.”

It was Justin.

“Hi,” he meekly said.

Without thinking, I slapped him across the face.

“What the-?” Joe exclaimed as I began running for the door.

Once outside, I leaned against the cold brick of the building, sinking to the ground and sobbing. A second later, Nick came.

“Emily what happened?”

“What is wrong with you?!” I screamed at him. “How did you find out about him?! And why would you invite him?!”

“Justin got our number somehow,” said Nick. “He called us and asked about you, so, we invited him. Emily, please tell me what’s going on.”

“He’s my…ex-boyfriend. And, he broke my heart!” I was now sobbing harder.

Nick kneeled down and hugged me as I cried. He stayed with me for several minutes, until my crying came to an end. I raised my head from my hands and found myself starring into Nick’s eyes. Despite my sorrow, I felt something amazing in that moment. And, in that amazing moment, we kissed.

Racing out of the driveway and down the street, all I could hear was the engine of the car. All was silent. Was that a good sign or bad ?

“Sure!” I replied.

She straightened my long hair so it flowed down my back, reaching my waist. And, combed my bangs to the side so they almost covered one eye, finishing it off with a gem encrusted clip in the back.

“I hope the boys like how we look,” she said.

After putting on our heeled shoes, we hurried to the spiral staircase, where the boys were waiting at the bottom.

Nick’s jaw dropped when he saw me. He didn’t take his eyes off me as I walked down the stairs. I noticed Joe starring at Wes, too.

“Y-you look-beautiful,” Nick studdered as he put his arm around me.

I blushed.

“Yes, you look amazing,” said Joe, putting his hands on Wesley’s shoulders and starring into her eyes.

As we walked to our limo, I thought back on our time with the Jonas Brothers. We had gone from almost getting murdered in a store, to this. This was the first time Nick was holding me when we weren’t in some sort of danger.

Matching blue velvet gloves and a blue velvet shawl lay next to it. Wesley and I immediately grabbed the dresses and began putting them on. Mine fit me perfectly, tight like a corsett on top, but puffing out at the waist and ending at my ankles. Small green beads adorned the straps and top of the dress. I was reminded of the victorian dresses women wore hundreds of years ago.

Wesley’s dress was just as amazing! Hers was a rich, shining gold with white beads. From her waist to her ankles, the dress was made of golden lace. She too, had matching velvet gloves. However, instead of a shawl, she had a cream colored cape with a white embroidery of roses.

We ran to the bathroom to put on our makeup. Wesley wore a voilet eye shadow and a light pink lipstick. While I, as always, put on black eye shadow with plenty of heavy black eye liner, and a deep plum lipstick.

I quickly rose to my feet and began running. I ran straight into the crowd, pushing everyone out of my way. Nobody tried to stop me, but, the crowd was so thick that I had to push some people to the ground. I couldn’t stop to worry about that, though. Tierran’s family had probably already alerted the Waarz. I would be lucky if I got out of the club alive.

Finally emerging from the still unmoving crowd, I reached the door. I heaved the heavy metal open and ran into the night air.

I had no choice but to run until my legs stopped moving and my lungs gave out. Why hadn’t I brought my damn car?!

Home was just up the road, but I couldn’t stop there, couldn’t go anywhere near there. They knew where I lived.

The chill in the wind made a stabbing pain in my lungs with each breath. I kept running down the middle of the street, cursing the Waarz, cursing the world, and cursing myself.

Kevin laughed, “Now that you’re family, you better get used to it. There’s press everwhere, everyday. And, since this was a court case, it’s gonna be even worse.”

“Don’t worry! We’ll protect you!” Joe said in a deep dramatic voice, trying to lighten the tension.

As soon as we stepped outside, I realized that they really did need to protect us. There were at least eight news station vehicles parked around the courthouse, and the entire place was swarming with new reporters. They all ran toward us, shoving microphones in our faces and shouting questions at us.

Surprisingly, I got scared. I felt like I was being attacked. Nick must have saw the fear on my face, because he came next to me and put his arms around me.

“It’s okay, just get to the car,” he whispered into my ear.

Keeping his grasp on me tight, Nick led me out of the crowd while Big Rob tried his best to keep the reporters away.

“You thought you could run from us, bitch?!” he screamed.

By this time, everyone in the club was staring…or screaming. It didn’t matter, though. He would just erase their memories.

My heart couldn’t take much more pain. Tierran wasn’t giving up. I had to do something.

I disipated my force feild. My hands started to heat up as a deep blue light engulfed them.

Just as he tried to strike again, I threw the light at him. Like a raging river, it emerged from my palms and rushed at him. My entire body vibrated from the great force.

It hit Tierran in the face, knocking him to the floor.
My hands slowly faded back to the pale color of my skin as they cooled. The light had gone no further than Tierran’s body, which meant he had absorbed it. He lay on his back, unmoving. Absorbing that much power could have easily killed him.

The club was amazing! The music was making my heart pound so hard. I was having a great time chilling with my friends.

Before I knew it, I saw a guy walking up to me. My heart skipped a beat. His eyes were bright green and his hair light blonde.

“Hey,” he said to me.

I smiled. “What’s up?”

“You’re really cute.”

“Thanks,” I blushed. “I like you too.”

We talked for the next half hour. We talked about school, friends, everything. I was really crushing on him!

“Can I have your number?” he finally asked.

“Sure!” I pulled a pen and paper out of my purse, scribbling the number down and handing it to him.

“Thanks,” he smiled. But, there was something wrong with his smile.

That’s when I saw the gold flicker in his eyes.

My heart skipped a beat again, but for a different reason.

They had found me. Damn!

He raised his hand as a gold beam of light came from his skin and hit me in the head, burning my face.

I quickly threw my hands above me and created a force field.

“1300.”
He stood, his back to the soldier.

The soldier’s voice was shaky, “We’ve got none left.”

He President turned from the window. “How many were killed first?”

“3.”

The President’s expression became angry. “Those three were a family. A single family.” His voiced raised, “How could you let the killings go from a family of three to an army of thirteen hundred?!”

The soldier stood and shook, saying nothing. He looked closely at the President’s face, and saw a single tear fall down his cheek.

“I never thought it would come to this,” the President said. He sighed, with sorrow in his voice. “We have to surrender.”

Shock came across the soldier’s face. He knew the attacks would continue to get more vicious. He knew there weren’t many more left…

But, surrender hadn’t crossed his mind. Surrender meant death, and everyone left knew it.

“But, Sir!” The soldier protested.

“Stop.” The President cut him off. “It’s over.”
