Geek Mythology's Stories

Having graduated from my Film and TV studies degree last summer I'm not sure what I want to do next, but I enjoy being creative, so I thought I'd give ficlets a try.

If you like what you see, encouraging coments are always welcomed. If you don't like it, constructive criticism is always welcomed as well.

I've written a few ficlets now, and for some reason you guys seem to like them. Personally I still think they're a bit hit and miss, but there's only one way to improve . . .

If by any chance you want to write prequels and/or sequels, by all mean please feel free.

He thought back to that moment. The way she was introduced as “my girlfriend, Sarah”. That moment that had secured his fate as best friends forever. Nothing less, but nothing more.

“Slow down, I can’t hear you”. Her sobs were the the only thing making more noise than the phone line he was shouting down.

It’s hard to hate such a nice guy. But from the sounds of it, that would be easy from now on. And he was the one she called. Thank god for phones hiding smiles.

“Wait a minute, let me make sure I heard you properly.” The phone went silent for the first time. Apart from the sniffles.

“Last week he said things were fine, and then out of the blue he ends it for no reason?

On valentines day?

Awesome!”

Even the sniffles went silent.

“Sarah . . . . are you still there?”

His parents taking half, the other half being saved. University? Travelling? Anything that would let him catch up with the road out of this black hole of a town. That was the thought that got him through the days, weeks, months.

He stood there filling the shelves he’d filled a hundred times before. A half price promotion. The lamps were new, but everything else was the same. From the shirt on his back, to the customers buying what the TV told them they needed.

But how much longer would it have to be? The more he worked, the more he saved. The more he worked, the more this job became his life.

If only something would happen.

Something to break the monotony.

This has to be the best present I got today. A package from my dad. He must have put it together when he knew he was dying. There’s loadsa stuff in here. A load of his old footie programmes, and there’s a scarf. Home shirt too. Bit old now, but it’s the thought that counts. Four or five old beer bottles as well, must have been a bit of a collection. There’s a letter from him in here as well, dated March ’90, a couple of weeks before hand. Talks about how he’s sorry he never saw me grow up, but how he’s sure I’m doing alright, and that he’s proud of me.

Got me thinkin’ really. I never really knew him that well, so now’s my chance to get to know what he was like. I had a look on the net, found out a bit about the Albion. Season starts next month. I got myself a ticket to the QPR match.

Extract from a creative writing project I did a while ago

Full moon. Howling wolves.

The young miller’s daughter was growing used to these strange, yet comforting surroundings since she had moved to this new place with her father. They could no longer afford to continue living in moderate luxury, they now lived in a poor house, with poor surroundings. The only thing that wasn’t shrouded in darkness and mystery was the tall castle. The tall, rich, grand castle, where the king lived in luxury while the rest of the population lived like magpies. Scavenging and protecting the scraps of food they had, as though their lives depended on it. For in most cases, their lives did indeed depend on it.

Her cunning and resourcefulness had begun to grow since coming where angels fear to tread. All angels, except this one of course, as her malnourished yet gratifying figure could have come from heaven itself. If heaven had not forgotten this bleak land.

It was a tall room, but it had to be. With five star Generals, came five star ego’s. And he had to please all of them.

“Mr President.”

They all stood so striaght at least one of them had to break their back. But if someone had, no-one showed it.

“This way Mr President.”

Each standing taller than the other, he couldn’t fully grasp it was all in vein as soon as he entered the room. The phone call only came through last night. 36 hours isn’t enough to get used to this new title.

As he followed his escort he couldn’t help but look at the map of continents dominating the main wall, dominating the whole room. Even with the ego’s. The fact it was no longer green confirmed all he needed to know. The task that now lie ahead was all to clear.

What the map now showed as red, was obviously theirs. What was shown as black, would be.
