“I am the good power in human form.” He looked at her again, as if patiently explaining to a child.

Emily blushed slightly. “So…what should I call you.”

“You mean a name? You can call me Wonderball, if you’d like.”

“Er…that’s just weird.” Emily thought a moment. “You need a human name, since you’re in human form.”

“In that case, would you like to assign me a name?” The being smiled.

“Sure. Uh…Alex.” The first name that popped in her mind was that of a friend from school. “Now, where am I?”

“As I explained before, this is my home.” Emily looked a little relieved. “In the place that the power of the Wonderball originated.”

Emily jumped up again. “You mean, not on earth?!”

“No, it is not safe for you on earth. The evil still resides there looking for you.”

Looking for her? “What? Why me? And what is this place – another planet?”

“I would not call it another planet, but another dimension of time. A place where power, such as that of the Wonderball, are allowed to grow.”

Two Sides to Power

“W-what?” Emily still did not understand what was going on, let alone where she was.

“I can see you are very confused,” the Wonderball-man spoke again. “Let me try to explain. The Wonderball was an extremely powerful being.”

Emily jumped up. “Being?! But…its just a toy.”

“Not at all. An extemely powerful being. And in all beings, there are two sides to that power. Good and evil. You know of what I speak?”

Emily thought a moment. “Good and bad. Yeah, I get that. But how…are you human?”

“Allow me to continue. The being was in complete conflict at the very moment it decided to physically hurt you. So the power split us. I am the good, as I saved you from the evil power.”

Emily was too shocked to respond. He continued. “I am not totally human, I should tell you. I took the shape of a human man because it is easy.”

“Then what are you?” She asked. It seemed a reasonable question. After all, if she was in the company of aliens, she had a lot of things to rethink.

Emily opened her eyes slowly. The events that had happened did not fully hit her mind until after a few moments. She jumped up.

She was no longer in the hospital. It was a dark room. She lay on a couch against the wall. That was all that occupied the room. Emily could see a door on the other wall and walked towards it. While she contemplated on opening it or not, the Wonderball man slammed the door open.

“Ah, you’re awake. How do you feel?” he asked her.

“I’m fine…Where am I? Where’s Dana?” The questions were flooding her mind and she was asking them as she thought them.

“You are in my home. I brought you here to keep you safe.” He waited for her to ask another question.

“Are you the Wonderball?” Emily eyed him suspiciously. After all, the Wonderball is what got her in such a mess in the first place.

“I am one half of it, yes.” Half of it? As she thought it, he continued to explain. “The other half is what tried to hurt you by taking you to the room and tried to choke you as I emerged.”

The heat in the room was almost unbearable. But Emily just could not take her eyes off of the former Wonderball. As it grew and shaped, it looked more and more human. This was becoming more and more strange.

The light brightened around the figure. Suddenly, the light flashed and gathered around Emily. She felt as though something were choking the life out of her.

Right when she felt as though she was going to pass out, the human figure yelled out something. The pressure released and a hissing noise ensued. The window shattered and the heat left the room. Emily looked towards the figure, now fully visible.

“Are you alright?” The Wonderball could now talk. It had taken the shape of a young man. He wore strange clothes, like someone in a science fiction movie. Black pants, black jacket. Emily felt like this might be a dream.

“Who…are you?” she asked.

“I am the one that warned you not to come here.”

Darkness began to overtake Emily. She was so tired. The room turned dark and she passed out.

Emily’s mind was in a rush to think of what to do. The Wonderball had warned her against coming here, yet had told her to bring it here. What in the world was going on?

She turned around. She had every intention to throw it out the window and end this. Her hand reached out to the lock, the Wonderball clicking in her other hand. Suddenly, it grew hot. Burning hot. Emily dropped it, crying out in pain. She looked at it on the floor. The Wonderball continued to make noises, louder and stranger.

Emily took two steps back, looking back at Dana. Fear was the only emotion she could see in her friend’s eyes now. Emily had made a huge mistake.

The room began to spin around Emily. The heat from the Wonderball was growing intensly. It felt as though the room itself may explode around them. She covered her eyes, trying to scream for help.

She looked up as the noise stopped. The Wonderball pulsed and grew, taking shape. Emily looked on. It almost looked as though it was becoming…human.

Missing Sunlight

The sun set hours ago, but it was still light.

Odd, Adrian thought. He looked toward the sky, but it only seemed as if the sun was still shining, though it had already disappeared beyond the horizon.

He tried to ignore the light as he set to work tinkering with his car. It had broken down just a short ways past the Nafern farm. Out in the middle of nowhere.

Adrian knew a little bit about cars, but only enough to make him seem smart when talking to other people about them. As he looked down at the slightly smoking engine, he knew he was probably going to have to get help.

The light in the sky was getting brighter. Adrian looked up again. What was going on?

A flash. Above the farm. It felt blinding to him. He fell to the ground, rubbing his eyes. A few moments later, he could see again. Jumping up, he looked towards where the flash had been.

The barn was on fire. Adrian ran towards it.

The Fog

Fog always puts me in a bad mood.

At least, it was today. I liked to sit on the window bench and look at the trees, the skyline, and other such things of nature. But today, I couldn’t seem to see anything at all. The fog had rolled in pretty suddenly, blocking out the afternoon sunlight. I sighed and stood up. I suppose I could entertain myself with something else.

I walked into the kitchen and stopped suddenly. Was that movement at the window? It was so fast, I couldn’t tell for sure what it was. Or if it had even happened. I could be seeing things. I took a step forward and looked a little closer. Nothing but fog.

I tried to calm myself down by telling myself it was nothing. Why did it scare me so much? Because I was alone. Because fog usually meant something bad was going to happen.

Only in movies. I laughed at myself and turned away from the window. It was nothing.

I heard a rapping noise in the other room. My breathing stopped and I was suddenly frozen solid. So it wasn’t my imagination.

We ran out of gas twenty miles from town. Go figure.

We were traveling from Greeley to Vail for a bit of skiing. It was my first time.

“What now?” I asked my friend, Casey. She was driving.

“Well…I don’t know,” she replied.

The sun was starting to set in the distance. Daylight was disappearing. The thought of being stuck in the middle of nowhere did not exactly strike me as fun. Casey hopped out of the truck and looked around. I followed.

“Maybe if someone comes by, we can ask for help.” It was my suggestion, if not somewhat lame.

“Maybe someone will come by and kidnap us!” Casey laughed. I did not.

“That’s not really funny…”

We waited for half an hour. No one came from either direction. We discussed how far back the last gas station was, but quickly decided it was too far to walk, especially in the dark.

Things were certainly looking bad for us.

It seemed completely ridiculous to jump out the window. Yet I had dreamed it so many times before. Now was my only chance.

I lifted the window, using all my strength to do so. I stuck my head out and looked down. A small ledge that I could stand on. Perfect. I heard someone’s voice shouting behind me, but I paid no mind. I wanted to escape.

It’s my only chance. Go!

Jumping out onto the ledge, the wind brushed past my ears. A perfect day for ledge jumping. I looked down for a moment, feeling a bit dizzy. No. I had to go on.

I moved across the ledge until I found a place to climb down. I found a balcony on the opposite building and lept across to it. I thudded down, falling forward, scraping my hands up a bit. I didn’t care. I was free.
