Today, my children will have bread.

My oldest stands in the corner by the door. His still form hides the clenched fist I know is there. He is obedient, staring forward, but I can feel the anger radiating from him.

He hates me.

The man comes into my small room without knocking. He looks at me- lust and loathing in his every footstep. When he reaches me he spares my other children a glance.
“Them”, he asks with a slight nod.

“They will not turn”, I say softly. “There is nowhere else for them to go.”

He does not answer, roughly grabbing my clothes and turning me around.
“Face the ground like the dog you are”, he says brusquely.

There is little sound but my youngest crying and the rough breathing of the man behind me.

And then it is over. Again.

He pushes me to the floor and adjusts his clothing.

He throws a coin on the floor. His disgust is almost as high as his urgency to leave.

I do not look up until he turns and walks through the door.

When he is gone I grab the coin.

I was too busy scraping for food, finding coke cans for change.
I hadn’t really eaten in two days.
Death fell everywhere. When the silence started getting to me, I rode my bike as far as I could everyday and holed up at night, aiming for parks.
When I found survivors it was suddenly.
Now, you might not think shooting lasers out of your eyes would be any sort of useful. But I beg to differ… it’s the easiest way to keep those ragamuffins off my damn lawn.

Ohhh, here comes that long-legged Taylor kid. Go git’em, Pappy!

Hey you- Stay off my damn lawn!

With the recent wave of people receiving super powers I would like to officially declare that my super power sucks.

My mom got super speed, dad can explode objects with his mind, even my stupid little sister can breathe under water… brat.

Jimmy across the street can fly. Ashley talks to animals. Taylor walks to school in fourteen steps with his stupid super stretch legs.

Even old man Winston can shoot lasers out of his eyes – LASERS OUT OF HIS EYES !

So why couldn’t I get a cool super power like that? I waited and waited and waited and this is what I get?! My family says that this its cool, and I’ll ‘appreciate it when I’m older’, but they don’t understand.

Why the hell would I want every girl I touch to fall in love with me?

Anyone want to trade?
