Shawn stood waiting in the faint light of the afternoon sun, gazing at the biggest bungalow nearby. The one he had told Amelie they would live in when they were older, and married. He noticed a figure approaching, he was certain it was Amelie. No one else would walk towards this abandoned playground, the place they called their sanctuary. True enough, Amelie approached him slowly, her expression confused and tired. As he stretched out his hand to help her climb the ladder, he noticed the sunlight reflecting in her eyes. As she settled herself beside him, lying her head on his shoulder, he asked “So how was your morning with Melanie?”
“She won’t be speaking to me, because of you.”
Shawn immediately understood. The girl despised him. They sat in silence for awhile, then suddenly Amelie moved away from him, removed her diary from her bag and started ripping it apart, tears streaming down her face
Stunned, all he could do was watch his girlfriend’s hysterical outburst right in front of his eyes.

Like every Saturday, Amelie and her friend Melanie met up at a Starbucks. But this wasn’t like any other Saturday. Mel looked angry as she waited her friend’s arrival. Surely, there was something that Amelie had done to make her friend feel that way.
Her thoughts proved correct. As she took a seat across from Mel, she noticed her friend didn’t look her in the eye. It seemed as though she was..disgusted. The two remained silent.
“So, you and Shawn. Again,” Mel asked in a disapproving tone, breaking the icy silence.
Slowly, Amelie nodded.
“Seriously, Amelie. Don’t you have a brain?” Amelie was speechless.
“Well, I promised myself I would never talk to any girlfriend of Shawn’s. He’s bad news. I’m telling you, when you fall, I won’t be there to pick you up. I’ll stand behind and watch. I want you to learn. And until you do, I won’t speak to you,” announced Mel, her words cutting Amelie’s heart like a knife.
With that, Melanie got up and left, leaving her feeling shocked, but mostly, hurt.

Deep in her heart, Amelie knew she still loved Shawn. Love, what a strong word. Never in her life had she felt so vulnerable, so breakable until she met Shawn. At first, it was all sweet but it started getting bitter when he kept hurting her, wanting so many other girls. Those fights they had, Amelie shuddered at the thought of them. How horrible love could be, it left her crying in the darkness, yearning for something, someone who couldn’t possibly be entirely hers. He was straying from her. She knew she would never hold a special place in his heart. She wanted so much to believe that he was really sorry. Oh, what a great liar he was.
Amelie looked up into Shawn’s mesmerising eyes and knew then and there that no one could ever take his place in her heart. She had already forgiven him a long time ago. He didn’t need to apologise. No matter what he did, she would always forgive him. The forgiving part of her might be small in her heart, but it was there. Definitely.

With trembling fingers, he opened up the letter and was surprised to find a poem written by Ana.

“Dearest love,
I have so much to say,
I would like to tell you,
That you always make my day.

I would like to say,
That without you, I’d die.
The reason is simple,
I love you beyond the reason why.

I don’t know how much you love me,
And I don’t know how much you care,
But just to let you know dear,
For you, I’ll always be there.”

Ana’s beautiful words touched Zack’s heart, and he felt more elated than he had in the past few months. Nothing, he thought, nothing could ever compare to his wonderful Ana.

Amelie’s hand felt cold in Shawn’s. Despite that, the feel of her skin was still the same. Smooth and soft. Shawn loved the touch of her hand, and he had been missing it for a very long time.

“Amelie?” he whispered softly. She didn’t seem to answer him.

She had closen her eyes, letting her hazel brown hair cover her face. Tenderly, he pushed her hair away from her face and was shocked to discover that her cheeks were wet from tears.

Slowly, he removed his hand from hers, unsure about what to do. He looked up at the sky, at the bright sun shining it’s radiance all over. Funny how it could be such a sunny day, when deep inside, Shawn felt like he could break.

The sun was rising from the mountains. Amelie could see it, she could feel it. Its warmth was spreading throughout her body. The heat tingled her bare skin. The rays from it brought out the light blue colour of her eyes. Such beauty, she loved it.

Amelie twirled the single white rose around her finger. It was the start of a brand new day. Usually, she liked starting a new day. But today was an exception. She could feel in her bones that it was going to be a bad day, as she slowly swung herself on her porch swing. It was somehow unexplainable.

She closed her eyes, inhaling the smell of sweet spring flowers. Suddenly, she felt someone’s hand touch hers. She turned to face Shawn. His fringe was falling over his eyes, oh she loved how he looked when his fringe fell over his eyes. He leaned in towards her and whispered two single words, “I’m sorry.”

Amelie was silent. She did not know what to say. Her heart was numb.
