It left me cold with the greatest feelings of dread I’ve ever felt. The sensation was so powerful it rendered me unconscious, my pen leaving a long streak of ink across the page as I blacked out.

All the clocks have stopped so I cannot tell what time it is now or even what day it is. I’m setting these words down in case they be my last. I’m going to the thicket to find Catherine and the source of the evil I’ve experienced and destroy it. Should I not return I hope someone finds this diary and uses it as a warning to others. This area has become cursed and rife with evil. Flee while you can and never return.

Dawn has broke and the sun is rising! The fog has lifted. this gives me hope. I’m leaving now.

God help me.

Who is that walking? It’s Catherine! She must have freed herself from the ropes and walked out. With all the pounding and stomping I could not hear her. She’s following the path! As she walks, the path closes behind her, sealing her off!

I can’t move from my chair! I’m powerless to stop this madness! Dear God! Protect her! Free her from the evil that has gripped her. She’s halfway up the hill and the fog just around the house is calming. It is also growing in volume. It will rise past the window in another minute or two, blocking my view! The spinning figure has floated to Catherine and appears to be escorting her to the top of the hill! The fog! It has completely blocked the window! I can’t see her! What has become of my Catherine!

I’m struggling against the invisible bonds that hold me here, that keep my hand writing, but I cannot break free. All of my strength and I cannot so much as lift my foot from the floor! I cannot….

One of the people has risen about 20 feet into the air but has not dissolved. It is slowly spinning and raising what appear to be arms. The spinning has stopped and one arm remains raised. It is pointing at me! I can’t avert my eyes or stop writing.

A sound as of a herd of cattle stampeding on the roof of the house and of thousands of fists slamming against the walls of the house! The sound is taking shape into a rhythmic beat, a very frenzied beat. It’s so loud, almost deafening. I can barely think, only write. The figure hovering over the crowd has started spinning again, rapidly this time. Faster and faster. It has a feint, sickening-green glow to it.

A path in the crowd is forming! It starts in front of the house where the front door is and leads to the northwest, up the hill to where the spring is – where the ‘cold thicket’ is located.

The fog is changing! The ‘boiling’ is becoming more defined. The ‘bubbles’ have become skinnier and taller, if that could be possible. Wait. Not taller – they’re taking shape. As incredible as it sounds, it looks like a massive crowd of people! Like thousands upon thousands of people standing shoulder to shoulder, trying to walk this way and that through the fields. There are head-and-shoulder shapes all over the place! Very frequently, a ‘person’ will shoot several feet into the air and dissolve into nothingness – like a ‘bubble’ bursting.

I’m so terrified, I’m almost petrified with fear! I find I can only write what I see and hear of the events happening just outside.

A fifth blast. This ended with an abrupt ‘snort.’ The boiling sea of people is getting more vigorous. More and more people are flying into the air and ‘bursting’ into wisps of mist that gently settle back into the evil froth.

It’s like some ‘lid’ being lifted off a pot. A layer of fog has drifted to hover just over the house, blocking out the moon but with it being a full moon, I can still see clearly across the fields. The fog below looks like a rolling sea or a great lake of boiling water. It is truly horrifying to behold.

A forth blast. This one is the longest yet, lasting almost a full two minutes. A sharp, harsh trumpet-like blast melds into a maniacal laughter. It is the most horrific sound I’ve ever heard!

It sounded like a blast from some great horn mixed with a terrible laughter and it all sounded like it came out through the nose! I know that sounds silly but that’s the only way I can describe it.

A second ‘blast’ just happened as I write this! It is very loud like it is fairly close and yet it is echoing across the valley. It has a hollow, evil, menacing tone to it. What ever is making that sound must be powerful given the volume. I certainly do not want to encounter what ever it is.

As I look out the window, the fog is just below the window sill. It is gently shifting. The moon is full and giving off a brilliant shine. It is both comforting and frightening at the same time.

The same with water – she doesn’t swallow it, only chokes on it. If I don’t find a way to get her to eat or drink soon, she’ll waste away.

There was a loud crash on the front porch. Sounded like someone trying to tear down the door! When I checked, many of the floor boards ripped loose. No doubt from all the water from the constant fog.

I stood on the porch for a while and I realized I haven’t seen or heard another living thing for days. No birds, squirrels, chipmunks…nothing. It’s like all life has deserted us.

She isn’t conscious enough to try untying the ropes, which is probably the only reason I woke up. When I lay her back down, she goes back to sleep, or what is passing as sleep for her.

I’ve been so incredibly tired with all the stress of loosing David and Catherine in a catatonic state then in a haunted state trying to leave the house. When she was catatonic, I could feed her by putting a little food in her mouth. She would chew it and swallow almost as a reflex action. Now, she doesn’t. I don’t know how to feed her.

It started raining a little while ago. I’m going to put out the rain barrels to catch some rain so we have fresh water at the house. Hopefully, the rain will wash away the fog. It’s been over a week of constant fog.

The rain has been coming down pretty hard for a couple hours now. The fog is as thick as ever! It’s like a stain on the world. No amount of wind or rain will carry it away.

She watched as his lips formed words but the voice that reached her ears was warbled and drawn out. The more she tried to make sense of the conversation, the more it seemed like a constant blur of vowels.

A sensation of pain crept up her arm and found its way to her brain. She turned her head to find the source of the pain impulse and as she did so, the room sloshed and wavered, like watching 20 foot ocean waves through a fish eye lens. She was hit with an overwhelming sensation of vertigo, causing her to flop from her chair and land face-first on the hardwood floor. Instead of feeling pain from the impact, she felt nothing as she slid into unconsciousness.

Jakob set his glass down and looked at her unmoving form for a minute before picking up the handset of the phone and punching in some numbers on the keypad. “I need a plumber. I have a broken pipe that needs fixed.”

Ryan rolled into a ball and slowly slouched into a sitting position. His vision was blurry and there was a loud ringing in his ears. The air was crisp and cool, which had a calming, soothing effect on a fleeting headache. As he looked around, he found himself in a featureless room about 10 feet square. The walls, ceiling and floor were pure white and emanating a soft glow allowing him to see clearly but not blinding him.
He made an attempt to stand but quickly flopped down. His muscles just didn’t want to respond. Content to simply sit there and recuperate for a bit, he busied himself with checking for injuries – cuts, bruises, broken bones. As the ringing in his ears faded, he could make out some kind of noise. Over the minutes, he could make out voices, like being in a crowded bar, all jumbled together, talking, laughing, singing, but all a mumble.
Hello Ryan.
“Who is that?” he said, startled and looking around. “Where are you? I’ll make some calls and we’ll bring in some professional snoops to begin a thorough, internal investigation. I suppose some congratulations are in order for you,” he offered a glass to Susan, who gingerly accepted it. “When this settles out, your efforts won’t go unnoticed, I can assure you.”
She smiled and tenderly drank from the glass. The liquid had a dry, woody yet slightly sweet aroma to it. The strong liquor burned her tongue and throat all the way to her stomach where it lit a fire.
Jakob Dillenger extended his arm, indicating he wanted her to sit in the chair in front of his desk. The “President, DynaVote Inc.” nameplate on his desk cast an unsavory shadow in the late day sun streaming in from the window.
