When I was growing up in the 50s and 60s, a dollar would buy your lunch. The old mom&pop stores would slice bologna, 5cts a slic, same for cheese, the hostess cupcakes were 25cts, a big bag of lays potato chips were 10cts and, an RC Cola, was 25cts.

On the day of the story, I needed one more quarter to make my dollar. When my dad asked me did I know what he did when he was my age to get a quarter, I didn’t know, but I knew it was going to be something extraordinary and, it was lol..

Here is a story my dad told me once:

When I was your age (about 9), I worked for a living, I laid telephone poles in the ground, I worked 14 hours a day, I had to hold the pole up with one hand while I ate lunch, know how much I made, 25 cts a week. I lived 25 miles from school, I walked everyday, uphill both ways, through the snow, barefoot. I didn’t have a belt to hold up my trousers, I used an old light cord, I had to get up before the sun, I fed the chickens, milked the cows, slopped the hogs and plowed the lower 47 acres, after that I had breakfast and, not that fancy stuff you have, I had bacon grease and a biscuit. We churned our own butter and homogenized our own milk.

I’d asked my dad for a quarter. After that story, I told him he got screwed, he didn’t punish me, cause he knew that story was too much. We still laugh about it to this day.

Descent, down, so fast, so far down. The soul came to me and warned me about the book. There was no listening, not for me. I was drunk on the power, I was breathing in the hypnotic effects of murder, they had wronged me and I didn’t mind that I had blood on my hands. I watched them all, each one meet his or her doom. The car accident, the empty elevator shaft, the falling pane of glass. It gave me chills, it made me giddy, I saw the fear in their eyes when I passed by, divine pleasure. They knew I was doing it but, they couldn’t prove it.
The soft down of wings touched my face, it sent a shock through my system, she warned,, “If you don’t cease your rampage, you will lose your soul.” I didn’t care about that.
Now I do, the torment, the pain and twisting inside me. Everything is dark, I see no light not of bulb nor sun. I begged please, the horned creature bared its fangs and laughed breathing sulpher in my face. Here I am, no way back, just my descent into the abyss. My prayer blistered my lips. Amen!

It was like velvet, so soft. I didn’t see. Instead, I sensed, perceiving, tasting, smelling. I could not move but, I was not in any discomfort. Something I was trying to remember, oh yes, how did I get to this state of being?

My mind filled with thought, nothing that made sense. There was an urgency. I needed something. I couldn’t remember.

Inside the darkness I started to hurt. Not definable, just a throb. A deep pounding, churning in my insides. I needed something!

I pushed myself to think, the thoughts made my head feel heavy. A man was there, his eyes were like ebony, the light played in them and they mesmerized.

Had I loved him? No, still my need for him was great, I burned to touch him, he held me, he kissed me, he stared at me. I was afraid, why? And then, a memory. I knew what had happened.

It made me angry, why had he done this. That urgent feeling, that memory, that realization made me queasy, I needed to get out!

I was surrounded by velvet, the soft dark velvet, of my casket..

She looked down at her hands. They were covered with burns, it didn’t hurt afterall, the burns were from the powers she possessed. She guessed it was better than being stained with blood, [they didn’t bleed].

She breathed in the pungent smell of sulpher, the sweet but sorrowful smell of victory. Only sorrowful because it was not good to kill. This had been necessary, required, this had fulfilled the prophecy.

Then another and the sky blazed, the fingers reached out to the tree, it was surrounded by the blaze. I had to feel it, it was inviting. I moved from the shade into the light.
So warm, I looked up and threw my head back, the ball of light climbed higher. I left the circle moving into the light. It felt good.

Hmm..thought this was supposed to be classy.. Look at the gowns these women were wearing, they looked like burlap bags. I could have over looked those maybe but then there was the hair. The proper style would have been a chignon. These days people didn’t care about proper.
I am out done, paper plates, styrofoam cups, plastic spoons and forks, that wasn’t wine.. it tasted like punch…I called one of the waiters over and asked him what was going on,, he told me to sit down and shut up, I complained rather loudly which was out of character for me, but he didn’t talk to me that way.. I told him to call the maitre’d.
That did not go well at all, that man hadn’t known anything. I’d tried to explain the way they were doing things was all wrong. Obviously he hadn’t even known the basic etiquette, nothing about running a hotel..And how did they try to excuse it? By saying that the hotel (Bayside Shore) was a mental institution. And soon as they untie me, I am going to complain.
