When Sam reached the door, he found his neighbor standing in the entryway bearing a large bag of vegetables. Sam asked Mr. Jeffers to come in, but he declined. “I know you’re expecting company, but Kate and I want to have you over once you’re settled,” Mr. Jeffers said. “We never miss a chance to make new friends.” On his way back to the house, he plucked a weed from his perfectly landscaped yard.
“Sammy, they here?” Ruby asked, shouting down the hallway from the master bathroom.
“Take your time, hun. It was Mr Jeffers with some veggies. They want us to come over some time.” Sam answered, placing the bag on the kitchen counter.
When Ruby walked out of the bathroom, Sam stopped dead in his tracks. “Ruby, you shaved,” he shouted. “You look amazing. I mean – not that you didn’t before, but…”
“It’s all right, Sam,” Ruby said, smiling. “You wanted to see who’s underneath all this hair, didn’t you, darling?” she asked, twirling around to kiss him on the lips. “Let’s open a bottle of wine.”
