All Hallow's Eve, Part IX: A Surprise Guest

Something came hurtling through the window, breaking the pane into a thousand shards of glass as it did so. I recoiled instinctively, pressing my naked back against the wall as my eyes slowly took in what lay on the carpet surrounded by the ugly jagged pieces of broken glass.

What I saw there on the carpet was worse than anything I could’ve imagined. A severed head lay there, dripping blood that was so dark it seemed black. Its sightless blue eyes seemed to be staring right at me, its red mouth stretched open and screaming…

I realized suddenly that the screaming was coming from me, but before I could process another thought, Brett was pulling the sweater over my head and pushing me to the door. To this day, I still don’t know how he got dressed so fast.

“Run, run for your life!” he squealed and ran out of the room, not caring at that point what happened to me. I put on my jeans and went running into the hall, still screaming at the top of my lungs.

I ran right after him, straight into Mother Superior.
