*Ist it better to write in 1st or 3rd person?*

by The 13 Year-Old

Hey Everyone. Its ME!

So I was thinking. Is it better to write in 1st person or 3rd person? (2nd person is just lame)

They both have their strengths. you can say anything you want to with 1st, but with 3rd you ahve a more proffesional, satisfying feel to your story. If your doing a major project then its best to do one or the other. but HEY . your opinions are the only thing that i want (cuz im only 12)

So if you want to then leave me your comments.

Thanks!

Personally, I find that first person is my favorite. It makes the character seem more vulnerable and more human.
Although, third person allows the reader to view the minds of many characters.

Yeah, good point man, I personally find that 3rd person feels better as it makes the book more broad. (plus it really fits good when you have your main character for it) but its hard to write with, ive come stumped in my books when i write in 3rd person.

1st person is easier to write with, but it makes the book seem a bit less proffessional and your opions are limited to what you want other characters to feel.

i often write in third person as I feel then I can let the reader make their own decisions and assumptions about the characters opinion and I often use – he or she – as then it adds a layer of anonymity and I can reveal who they are later

i mix and match when I’m writing – like the main story in third and snippets and sections in the first person to show urgency and immediacy or to reveal their thoughts…i think it’s more fun that way

I agree with both. I wouldn’t say it’s a matter of professionalism, but in Laine’s light, especially when I’m trying to make a character seem vulnerable (excepting Adrien/Grasshopper’s case), I love to use first person.
Second person, however, can broaden the whole perspective of the story and plot, and you can skip around more. However, I incorporated both first and second in the Endless Corridor series (gosh, I sound like a stuck-up jerk) and it worked fine.
I’m another 12-year-old, so hope this helps.

Cool to see the young are taking over.

I’ve never really tried that, I don’t like to skip around a bunch with the POV , but from taking 3rd person to 1st person… I’ll have to try that some time, thanks artistsrunwild.

I always go to 3rd for one of my “worker watching boss with contempt” things, then swap over to 1st for a bit as a former worker, so I guess they’re both the same.

ok, first of all people, there are 2 kinds of 3rd person.
first there is the regular 3rd person, where you are narrating from outside of the story, but can only tell the thoughts and feelings of one character.
the 2nd kind of 3rd person is 3rd person omnicient-when you are narrating from the outside, but you can tell the thoughts and feelings of everybody.

i personally prefer reading in 3rd omni., but its really hard to write, so i usually aim the the plain old good ones.
for a suspensful or romantic story, i use first person. for any other story, i use plain old 3rd
