“Oh Agustus, she’s beautiful.”

Agustus smiled at the photograph of his newborn daughter, Scarlett. From the moment she was born, she was the apple of his eye, the light of his life.

“What’s her name?” his coworker asked.

“Scarlett,” Agustus replied, pocketing the photograph again. He was sure his first child would have every opertunity for greatness open to her. She would up with the phrase, “La vie avec éclat” ringing in her ears. The phrase, meaning “life with brightness,” would be her guide throughout life, up until her end. Just like the phrase, she would always live brightly.
