Cancer and the Right to Life

by Mike Kearney

“I’m sorry, did you say they’re a cancer?” Jack wasn’t going to except his wife’s statement without an explanation.

“That’s what I said.” Jen took another forkful of breakfast, and continued while she chewed. “Think about yourself as a cell in a body.” She stopped to swallow and Jack waited for her to continue, but the hanging silence let him know that she was done explaining.

“I’m sorry, I don’t get it. I’m a cell, so they’re cancer?” He looked down at his own breakfast and pushed it away. He could never eat when she spoke while chewing.

A sip of coffee and a forkful of food went in before she expounded. “We’re all cells in this new body, and what is a cancer? An irregular cell acting against the body.”

He took a sip of his own coffee. “So, they desrve to die?” He looked down at the newspaper and wondered if the reporter would fall victim to an ‘accident’ for reporting the truth of the events.

“That’s not what I said.” She said around a mouth full of eggs.

“I guess even cancer has a right to life.”
