Last Beats of a Soldier

by Jennifer Meow

My last breath.
The pain is inticing, and I am beginning to lose sight of the battlefield.
I feel the heat of Iraq, and my wound continues to ooze blood. Soon there is a puddle around my body.
I feel no shame, no regrets, just sadness.
Sadness that I would never ever see my two boys again, my beloved wife, and all my students at my school.
With my last ounce of strength, I take out a picture of my family I always carry in my back pocket, kissed them one last time, and waited for god to take me up to heaven.
