Stage Fight (NaNoWriMo)

“Just like ol’ times, ain’t it, Sarge?”

“Don’t call me that anymore, Duke. You know i’m…”

“Retired?!?” Duke finished for her. “Are you payin’ tenshun ter the situashun here?”

“Ohh yes I am, my boy,” Mrs. Caldwell grinned over to her young partner. “but this ain’t work fer me – it’s personal.”

“Like hell! I always knew that settlin down wit Johnny Marsh of all people wouldn’t keep your badge from shinin’ again sometime – kids or no kids! Bet John knew it too – seein as how he went n took off…”

“That’s enough, Deputy. When our unit got closed down we were victims of our own success, is all. But we all knew this land would need our protection again – these times are just too lawless, an always will be at that. So you got to walkin this road come night like a ghost, I taught my girls to shoot, an John went out to find the new trouble as soon as he smelled it comin’”

It was Duke’s turn to grin – imagine bein a lawman workin with the best… who was a woman. Again. Even the twins could probably shoot now.
