A transmuted Universe

by Ben Paddon

There was something fundamentally wrong with the Universe.

It had been changed, reshuffled. Some planets were not spinning in the correct direction, for example, while others simply didn’t exist anymore. Wholly new planets has sprung into existence, bringing with them new races with new histories.

That was something else that had been altered. Events in history had happened at different times, in the wrong order – assuming they’d happened at all. Van Gogh had cut off the wrong ear. Einstein had been born three years late in the wrong town, and failed utterly to wow the world with his intellectual prowess. Da Vinci’s flying machine had gone into mass production, spawning the aviation industry centuries early. The Pussycat Dolls’ “Doncha” had failed to chart.

New flora and fauna existed, while others were emended or erased. Deer didn’t have antlers anymore. Nobody knew what a sheep was.

But no one noticed these changes. Things had always been this way. The universe hadn’t been altered, just… rewritten.

Anyways, this sounds like an uber-intriguing idea. I just might sequel/prequel it if I have the time…you’ve captured my interest.

It was Van Gogh who cut off his ear, not Picasso.

Other than that, nice stuff! :)
