“A prophet’s job is never done.”

“Well, no, I guess it wouldn’t be. With the end times, terrorist attacks…”

“No, no. I don’t prophesy any of that stuff.”

“Oh, really? Then what do you prophet about?”

“Oh, you know. What you’ll have for lunch that day, what time your mom’s going to call you to tell you all about her day, that kind of thing.”

“Isn’t that kind-of, you know, trivial?”

“I guess so, but all the big stuff was covered by other prophets.”

“Well, couldn’t you help with police investigations or something?”

“Huh?”

“You know. Prophesy about who did it.”

“Well, I don’t know that it would be a good idea for me to do that.”

“Why’s that?”

“Because I have to go out and do everything I prophesy myself.”

“You mean?”

“Yes. I’m a self-fulfilling prophet.”

    You get a very good chuckle from me, sir. Grand work.

    My only criticism is that you use the word “prophet” when you should use “prophetize” some of the time — ”prophetize” being the action of giving prophecies.

    Hmm. I did that intentionally, because I figured the average person- and thus the poor sap in this dialogue- wouldn’t know how to use that word in a sentence. I think I’ll go back in and add elipses before and after the word to indicate that the speaker was searching for the word but couldn’t find it. Thank you for your critique.

    ...Also, ‘prophetize’ is a very uncommon word. Only one dictionary I could locate online has it. Most dictate the correct word as ‘prophesy’, which I used elsewhere correctly.

    I like this one, it’s very funny. I think the “twist ending” loses its teeth because the twist is that the character is perfectly normal… not exactly shocking. I think that’s because everybody thinks he’s normal to begin with. It might have been more powerful if he had long had people convinced he was a great (and real) prophet, and then turned out to be a fraud. Still, I love the wordplay of a “self-fulfilling prophecy” and it was an enjoyable read. Thanks for entering my challenge!
