An Unexpected Implication

by Ben Paddon

They’d been wandering for days, and they’d found nothing. Was this all that was left of their world? Tentatively, Clive tried the radio against the far wall. Not so much as a crackle.

“This is what happens,” said Brian, “When Politicians control the assets on our planet. Until they learn to let the people—“

“Gordon Bennett,” said Dave. “If he’s going to keep yammering on like that I might just shoot myself.”

“Give him a break,” said Clive, fiddling with the radio dials in vain. “He’s just… a little off.”

“I don’t know why we let Brian come.”

“Because,” said Clive, in a matter-of-fact tone, “He’s smarter than Einstein, Hawking and Kutcher combined. Tell you what, when you provide the equations to safely dispose of toxic matter, let me know, okay?”

“But his equations didn’t work, did they? That’s the very reason we’re in this mess.”

This ficlet is largely at the request of the people who enjoyed reading “An Undesirable Happenstance.” Generally, I’m not a big fan of writing sequels/prequels to my own work, but I figured maybe some additional information about their situation might encourage others to try and build more around the events that led to Brian and Clive’s unfortunate predicament.

“Why do you have to be so negative?”—kind of a funny question to ask in a post-apocalyptic nightmare.
