Vampire Fruit?

He lay there in wait, passing the time. Just waiting for the moment someone would pick him. For then, it would be too late.

A woman in a red dress approached where he sat. After taking a few moments to inspect him, she grabbed him and lifted him from his repose with ease. Her breath washed over him like a warm breeze. As her lips touched his body, worshiping his very presence, he struck. Fangs erupted from his now-present mouth, sticking her tongue. Not his favorite place for a snack, but it did keep them from screaming, and it was the easiest place for him to access. The woman dropped to the ground, shriveled. It had been a long time since he had eaten. The other humans around her were screaming, but no one even noticed him laying next to her.

After all, to them, he was only an apple.

    And I thought Bunicula was an odd idea. Can’t help but picture the fruits and vegetable from The Muppets, which adds an additional level of humor to it all. Good job on having the description just vague enough that the twist isn’t totally expected, but not vague it doesn’t make sense.
