“I’m beginning to like you, so you probably won’t get what I’m going to do. I’m walkin’ away from you, this probably don’t make much sense to you. But I’m trying to save you, from all of the things that I’ll probably say or do.” He said sadly, backing away from me.
I was blown away, what could I say? It all seemed to make sense. I shook my head and said, “My life with you means everything, so I won’t give up that easily.”
All he said to that was, “I could stay a while, but sooner or later I’ll break your smile. And I could tell a joke, but one of these days I’m bound to choke. And we could share a kiss, but I feel like I can’t go through with this. And I bet we could build a home, but I know the right thing for me to do,” he looked down at his hands, “is to leave you alone.”
And with that he got in his car and drove off, leaving me on the curb in front of my house. Salt tasting tears, they roll off of my lips. But I wiped them away and thought, “If I could do one thing, I’d bring him back.
