Her First Time Feeling Scared

by Nouvelle Bardot

Nancy didn’t get off at the next stop. The train had cleared, and she found a suitable spot to sit. She wanted to ask for help, but she was scared to speak to any of the other passengers.

She could hear loud music playing, and looked over to her left. The train car was alive with the joyful sounds of a mariachi band, playing live for the train passengers. Nancy quickly turned her head back. She held her flowered purse close to her chest.

These people are so strange! She thought to herself. She closed her eyes tightly, hoping that somehow in doing so, she could go back home to Montana where everyone was the same and not as scary. She thought of her parent’s ranch, and the quick gallops of her horse, Maybelle. She quietly dreamed of the flat, open space that seemed to go on for miles and she longed for it.

But what she really wanted was Benjamin.

Why did she let him take her here? This is where he belonged, he was smart, and so brave…why couldn’t she fit in here in New York like Ben?

I’m totally enjoying this! The train can either be great or scary for someone who’s never been, and now she’s on her own! With no cell service! I think it would be fun if you showed the shifting demographics of passengers as she goes from station to station, from the college students and hipsters (did I actually write “hipsters?”) in the East Village, to the yuppies Midtown, on to the diverse neighborhoods of Queens! Looking forward to reading more…
