I remember I was a kid in the throes of passion for a boy who had little interest in me when I got TN – a ten word piece which proved he deemed me alive. He had thought about, touched and wrote something I agonized meanings out of for the next week. That was ‘The Note’, but somehow just not quite as deserving of capitalization.

What about ‘The NOTE ’ my grandfather had penned shortly before his death? Arthritis had finally beaten out of his hands the last of the beautiful penmanship teachers had beaten into them but to me it was a glorious note from God, encircling and protecting me.

The note the boy wrote was nothing like the “Hey, do you have some paper I can borrow? John”, or the “Dear,. Love Grand-pop”. It was just ‘THE NOTE ’. A scrap of paper exchanged for a life.
