Music For Listening: How a 30-Minute Song Can Not Be a Total Waste of Time

I’m not usually a fan of lists, but lists of favorite music are too good to pass up. Especially when you’re a few days late.

1 – Rush. Quintessential listening for misfits, eggheads, and musicians. And Geddy Lee – aren’t her vocals and bass playing fantastic?

2 – Genesis. I like the Gabriel and post-Gabriel eras equally, although for entirely different reasons. Play “Follow You Follow Me” for any girl and she will swoon for you.

3 – Dream Theater. Nerd metal. Why play one note when you could play 30 in the same space? Why write a three-minute song when it could be a 40-minute suite of movements?

4 – The Moody Blues. “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere” is one of those rare songs that is appropriate listening for any mood.

5 – Spock’s Beard. The pop sensibilities of CollinsGenesis, the musical dorkery of GabrielGenesis. Set aside twenty minutes today and listen to “The Light.”

Special Mention – Duran Duran. Seriously. Her name is Rio, and she is one hell of a good pop song.
