The Job

Jacob whispered while grabbing my hand, “I’m sorry Sofia. I’m so sorry.” I smiled and replied, “It’s not your fault.” I stood on my toes to kiss him and he smiled back. Out of habit, I glazed around to see where Owen was. He was sitting on a bench with his head in his hands. I started to walk toward him, but Jacob stopped me. “Don’t…don’t go over there. He’s pissed at himself now. Come on.” We ambled together back to his car and drove to his house. On the doorstep, a card was sitting there alone. Jacob reached down to pick it up. The envelope was blank and so he ripped it open. On the inside was a notebook sheet of paper. There were words all in block letters: I’M SORRY . How did Owen get this card here so fast? No, it couldn’t be him. I wonder? On the other side of the paper, in the same print was: YOUR DAD . Jacob sat down on the front step and I joined him. He whispered, “Oh my god, my parents. Now what?” I shrugged, but snuggled close to comfort him. It was my turn to do that job.
