I’m standing by the window, looking out on the preparations happening on the grounds below. I look in the mirror. I’m 25 as of one week ago. I stare at myself remembering a younger me, a seventeen-year-old me. I look at my phone. One new voicemail. Hm.
I hit speaker and set the phone down as the message begins.
Hey Judie, it’s me, Blake. I’m sorry I can’t be there, but it all sounds amazing. I’m really calling because I have some news, though. I’ve quit smoking, officially. It’s been three months since I’ve touched a cigarette and I don’t feel the urge to either. Also, I’ve been promoted, Judie. Me! I’m a Major! Can you believe it? I miss you Judie, being stationed in Iraq is not very fun. Don’t forget to say hi to the guys for me. he paused Judie, I owe everything to you, I hope you know that.
