Doorbell Surprises

Skipping past the boring airplane trip, we left the airport in a hurry with Jacob driving a rental car. “Jacob you’re here for me right?” I asked. He smiled, kissed my cheek and replied, “Always. Trust me.” I nodded letting the topic go as we sped through New York. Even at 6pm I could still see important landmarks of my life here. There’s where I met Pete; there’s where we…uh connected; there’s where we fought; there’s where he broke my wrist; and there’s where he dumped me, I thought as we zipped through the city. Jacob stopped at an apartment building and I knew it was Pete’s. We got out and climbed the steps together to his floor. I was surprised I didn’t break down as Jacob rang the door bell. It was the same ding-dong noise and I cringed. Jacob clutched my hand as we heard shuffling and footsteps on the other side of the door. Of course, Pete opened it. Behind him I could see Hannah sitting on the old blue couch but I couldn’t take my eyes away from Pete’s shocked expression if my life depended on it.
