I hug El as tightly as I possibly can without hurting her and wave her good-bye. When she’s out of sight I turn back to Wafe. “So, ready?” He asks.
“Mmmhmm.” I lie.
“M’kay, let us be for going.”
“Huh?”
“Get in the car so I can take you home.”
“Oh. I knew that.” We get in and I say hi to his dad. Thank goodness it’s his parents and not Mike’s again. They’ll talk to me on the way home. They do, well, until we get to the store and they have to go inside.
“We’ll be out in fifteen minutes.” Mr. Klive says.
“Okay dad.” Wafe’s parents head into the store and he turns to me. “So, are you planning on telling me?” I look back at him and feel tears building up behind my eyes. They won’t be held back for long. Wafe sees them falling down my face and hugs me. “Oh, don’t cry. Please don’t cry.” He says. “I’m sorry. You don’t have to tell me.” I put up a hand so he’ll be quiet.
“It’s not your fault.” I sniffle. “I’m fine. It’s just…. I was abused in a teachers’ lounge.” He looks at me horrified and hugs me tighter.
