A Clear and Concise Answer

by Ben Paddon

Seb put his drink down, and asked the question that had been burning in his brain for the past couple of hours. “Which do you think is scarier, being trapped in a relationship with someone you don’t love, or being alone?”

“Hmm,” hmm’d Mark, stroking his chin. Seb hated this. He knew Mark only stroked his chin when he was pretending to think about something. In reality he was probably checking out the girl behind the bar. “It depends on who I was stuck with.”

“What?”

“Think about it,” said Mark. It was a world first – he had been thinking. “If I were trapped in a loveless relationship with, say, Jennifer Aniston, or Kari Byron, I reckon I could live with it.”

“Erm…”

“That said,” Mark continued, ignoring Seb, “If I were with Freddie Kruger or Charlie Manson, I imagine I’d have a harder time of it. Ooh, this is a tricky one…”

“I’m asking a serious question here. I’m not asking you to come up with an imaginary relationship,” said Seb.

“Nor do my parents,” sighed Mark, “But it keeps ‘em happy.”

I liked it, especially the ending. I think the last line really sells it.

If you’re British, wouldn’t a britcom technically just be a sitcom? I mean, what do Brits call American sitcoms?

    Don’t answer that.
