The creature

Alexa Buckman stood at the edge, staring at the amazing sight before her. Her two parkas, sealskin boots, and wolfskin hood with incredibly thick fur provided just enough protection from the freezing cold that was Antarctica. She was the only one left in her group that hadn’t fallen through the ice to an unlucky death.

When the creature had finally broken all the way through the ice, Alex caught sight of what it looked like. At first glance, it appeared to be a seal with a unicorn horn on its head, but as it stretched, she saw a peek of the sleek, charcoal black feathers underneath the flap of skin that protected them from the water.

When it finally settled itself, it watched her with its dark eyes. She felt there was something unnatural about them, and started feeling frightened. Her mind raced through the events that happened in the past few hours. How could have her teammates fallen through the ice just like that? She remembered spotting a dark shape swimming underneath.
And then,

It attacked.

Welcome! Great first entry! Wonder what made the penguicorn so mad? I mean she was just standing there, and supposedly it just ate, a few times. Hmmm. I’m curious.

Very nice indeed. I like the creature bit, but also in the first two paragraphs the word choice is superb. For some reason, I found the word “unlucky” before “deaths” to be especially forceful. The “k” sound was cool, maybe.

I was thinking like a feathered narwhale maybe? Whatever the darn thing looks like, great little bit of a story.
