From the Case Files of Celeste Bellini, Vampire Psychiatrist: The Liam O'Connor Sessions (4)

by BARomero

“My pastor won’t even see me,” Liam begins on this session. “Nine years, never missing a Sunday. And now, I’m an abomination.”

“Aren’t we all?” The joke was meant to comfort Liam. He takes none from it.

“Easter is coming up.”

The irony is not lost on either of us. I put down my pen. I lean forward in my chair. “Liam, what do you believe?”

“I’m Catholic…”

I wave my hands. “That’s your religion. But what do you believe in? What is your role, your reason for being in this world?”

Liam stops pacing.

“I don’t know. To protect the McGees? CherryPop mostly.”

“That’s your job. Think bigger, Liam.”

Liam digs deeper. He actually sits on the edge of the chaise.

“I think,” he begins. “I believe… we’re here to serve God and Man…”

“Let’s go with that,” I say. “What makes you uniquely suited to do this?”

“I’m already dead, so I can’t be killed again. Something along those lines?”

“It’s a start, Liam.” I put a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “Let’s talk about this some more next week.”

To be quite honest, I’m not quite sure where I’m going with this section, but I wanted to get it out before tomorrow. I was thinking of some sort of allusion to Lazarus, but wasn’t sure how to work it. Let me know what you think, if it works or if I need to make adjustments.

I didn’t expect the religious angle. It’s interesting to think that Liam might have been religious. As usual this is well-written and introduces a new layer to Liam’s character.
One minor thing – and don’t quote me on this because I’m not religious, but I think the term ‘pastor’ is used among Protestants rather than Catholics… ah yeah, I heart Google. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pastor
It just jarred me a little for some reason.

I think the Easter connection worked perfectly, when you keep in mind that Easter is actually the celebration of the resurrection. We have two characters in one way or another resurrected, but to the status of being abominations in contrast to saviors. That would make for one heck of a psychological conundrum for the person involved. Great addition.

I also enjoyed the added complexity to the character. And I agree with Melia, it probably should be priest not pastor.
